Subject: Scout and Jordan

In August of 2003, I lost my pet ferret Scout to kidney disease. She was eight years old and had carried me through many bleak times of my life. This was the face I looked for when I came home every day. When she was there, I knew that things would get better and to keep forging ahead. It is amazing to feel such love for an animal. It has taken many months to be able to think about her death and to write even a short note about it. She was so many things to me that it hurts to think of the many years I will go through without her. I live with the guilt of having to euthanize a companion I would have given any amount of money to cure. Never again will I come to bed at night and have the comforting presence of my angel to dream with. I miss you so much Scout and I still hurt every single day without you.

Jordan was another ferret I lost about a month later to lymphosarcoma. I still believe that I see her galloping about the room waiting for her favorite treats. Piper misses you so much. She does not play now, even with the new babies. I think a part of her went with her best friend. It is so hard to lose two animals in a matter of a couple of weeks. I never thought the hurt would be so sharp and unbearable.

I love you both so much and will always think of you doing a ferret dance and fighting for all of the treats before the others could have any. Play and frolic, little ones, I love you so much. My heart has broken and pieces have followed you to heaven. You are not hurting now and can eat all of those treats and play as long as you want.

Forever in my heart,
mom
