I am so sorry you lost your wonderful friend and companion. He is in a happy place now, with no aches or pains. Read the poem, The Rainbow Bridge and you will see where he is.
Your Mom did a hard thing, but it was the right thing. Sometimes it is very hard to see a dog suffer and they trust that you will do the kind thing. Dogs are not afraid to die, they know something better waits for them.
How lucky he was to have had such a wonderful, loving family to grow up in. You blessed him and he blessed you.
In time, perhaps you could consider giving another dog a good home. He won't be the same, but he will be special all the same.
Meanwhile, it's ok to cry and cry a lot. It's hard to loose something you love, but you will be together again some day. God bless you.
Lorraine
