No, I don't think real phonics is taught much in the public school
system today. There is widespread recognition now that phonics is
superior to "look-say", but that doesn't mean real phonics is taught.

"Look-say" teaching methods are more profitable to school book
publishers, because students progress from stage to stage and need new
books at each stage. "Look-say" is also easier to fit to a classroom
situation. Hence it remains pervasive, in various forms, in public
school.


Most parents, and even teachers, have little input into the selection
of the curriculum for public schools. The superior profits of the
"look-say" approach ensure that it will be around for a while.
