 I agree with your findings about the golden rule, I have adapted it slightly. If I know the child has a secure knowledge of the phonemes within the word then I encourage them to sound it, the children know that if I don't give them the word immediately the I BELIEVE they can do it. Obviously this method is built on trust and develops over time.
