Catherine, I to have worked with students who, having been in the system for 7 years, arrive at the secondary school unable to read. Each student is different but for one severely dyslexic student encouraging him to read daily to his 3 year old sister made all the difference. She loved the attention that big brother lavished on her, and he read aloud to someone who never commented on his reading accuracy. In school we managed to find 10 minutes a day to read together in addition to all the other support he received. As his skills developed he continued to read to his sister, helping her to develop her love of books and some of her reading skills. He felt that he didn't want her to repeat his bad experiences of reading.
I find working with all age groups rewarding , but believe that the sooner we can get their phonics secure the less damage is done to the students self confidence and feelings of self worth.
