I also found the BBC programme Can’t Read, Can’t Write very intriguing. What concerned me was the teaching method employed by the tutor Phil Beale. The students were taught to read and then taught to write later in the course as two separate issues. Surely it is best practice to teach reading and writing simultaneously. Children in pre-school nursery are taught to trace the outline of letters before they are proficient readers. In this series the task of writing seemed a ‘detached’ activity from that of reading. Practicing reading and writing complement each other, just as the more you read the better you become at spelling because you are more familiar with the words as the enter your visual memory. The Kinaesthetic or practical learning style used by one of the adult learners could have been integrated with tracing the shape of the letters on paper.
