Hi everyone, I've been asked to share some ideas for use when teaching CVCs. I hope they come in useful for someone!

Sand Tray Buried Treasure: I often hide small magnetic letters in the sand tray which the children can use to make their own words. When focusing on CVC words, I also hide small objects in the tray so that children can spell out the corresponding words. For example, a clothes PEG, a doll’s LEG, etc. For more able students, I sometimes provide labelled boxes where the items can be sorted according to their word ending. For less able students who find letter recognition difficult, I include labelled pictures of the CVC words so that they are able to create the word successfully before having to sound it out.

Ladybird word families: As part of the class minibeast theme, I made ladybirds with removable wings which can be used to make CVC words. The left wings have the letters a-z printed on them, whilst the right wings have common word endings (an, in, at, etc). The children can then match these up to create new words. They can be used during free activities or as a focus in a game situation. In the game, children win 2 points for every ‘real’ word they create and 1 point for a nonsense word which they can sound out successfully. By giving 1 point for a nonsense word, it eliminates the fear of failure and has worked especially well with less able children. For the free activity, I provide ladybirds with pictures of CVC words on their backs which the children use as stimulus for creating words.
