To avoid confusion between the letter 'b' and 'd' I use this technique:
• When writing the letter 'd': every time I or the child write this letter, I have to remind them that the letter name 'c' comes before the letter name 'd'. So once I start to form the first part, which looks like the letter 'c', I say, " 'C' comes before 'd'…", I continue the formation of the letter by saying, " …up and down." Then I say the letter sound and repeat it by writing in the air. Children would practice skywriting and then write it on their boards. The alphabet should be displayed, as I point to the letter through demonstration. A child would have a visual memory from seeing the letter, an auditory memory from writing the letter in the air or on their boards.
• For the letter 'b': I use the sand tray and a toy car. I tell the children that I will show them the way to get to the park lot, which shows the direction of the letter formation.
First, I move the car starting from the top. Then I come down to the end of the road. "It is closed!" I say. After that, I go back to the middle of the road and turn left to take the big turning around the lake to park my car.
They have fun taking turns trying to get to the parking lot. I display a card of the letter 'b', designed with street lines and arrows that show the direction to the parking lot, on the wall to strengthen their visual memory. They use auditory memory when hearing the sound said out loud, tactile from writing in the air and a kinetic memory from moving the car in the sand.
