Hi everyone, I've been asked to share some ideas for use when teaching Magic ‘e’.
Magic ‘e’ is introduced after straight forward sounds have been covered. Before children do any activity I do a quick revision about vowel names and sounds. I say them out loud using a vowel wall chart which shows long and short vowel words and their pictures.
To teach magic ‘e’, I write some examples of CVC words on the board. I show how the addition of magic ‘e’ changes the middle vowel and says its name instead of its sound, by using a ‘magic wand’ attached to letter ‘e’ on top. Every time we need to add magic ‘e’, we need the touch of the wand to make the vowel sound long; at the same time children read words on both sides to recognize the difference before and after using the magic ‘e’.
To reinforce children’s understanding, teacher can help them make a magic ‘e’ book. Each vowel would be written on the left hand side page with two words, one says the sound- CVC- but the other says the name CVCV. Children put two relevant pictures on the adjacent right page. All vowels could be displayed in that book to help children learn how magic ‘e’ works.
Children enjoy matching cards of short vowel pictures to other cards of long vowel pictures. They read a card with a CVC word and try to find the other card that has a ‘magic e’ added to the same CVC letters. They read both words and see and hear the difference.
