HI David

I was reading your post and thought I could perhaps contribute something as I am a speech and language therapist. You are right the /th/ sound is very difficult and one of the later developing sounds in English ( some native tongue English speaking children still have problems with this sound up till 8 years old). In fact even in some English accents e.g. London the /th/ is pronounced with a /f/ sound instead - so you hear 'fing' instead of 'thing', etc. This can be difficult when children are learning to spell, although in my experience most children start by spelling the word the way they say it but then learn to correct it to the standard spelling.
