I currently teach an EAL class in an international school. Most of the children in my class are from Japan and Korea. I teach phonics daily and constantly encounter the same problem. These children really struggle to correctly pronounce certain letter sounds. For example the r sound is very difficult for them to pronounce. They also really struggle with short and long vowel sounds for example they find it hard to diffferentiate a, e and u. The reason for this is that their own language does not use these sounds and they therefore have to train their mouth to produce these sounds. Can anyone help me to help them? I am not a speach therapist and am used to teaching children who are already able to make the sound being taught. Thanks
