Hi all,
I wish to share this amusing idea of using puppets to teach phonics, the children surely learn with ease and interest if you are able to use it the right way !!
There many ways of making up your own act depending on what you have to teach.I have this big hand puppet named 'Woofy' the dog who helps my pupils to learn the letter sounds,I sit him on my lap and introduce the session with a little story.I normally use the same puppet for all phonic sessions, so that the children are able to relate to the sounds and link the sessions.I write the letters with a dry wipe marker on the dog bone and show it to the children,we sound it out together. Then ask the puppet to read (you can give your voice like a ventroloquist or ask help from another adult in the class) if the puppet is able to read ,he gets the bone.(the puppet can also make a mistake which you or the children can improve but make sure that the children don't make fun, if he not able to do it correctly )The children get engaged with such an activity and are completely switched on.
Or alternatively, you can put a word or a letter card around the puppet's neck and help the children to sound it out or match the sounds on two cards. The ones who are able to do it well, get a chance to come out kiss the puppet or any other reward to do with the puppet works well.
You can also use songs and actions with the puppet.
