I am sharing my experience of trying out the "Drawing Sentences" activity (from Module 4 of the Synthetic Phonics practical route).

First, the children read out the sentences. Then, we discussed the meaning of any unfamiliar words and I explained what the task was to ensure that they had a clear idea of what they were to do. Finally, they set out to draw pictures for each sentence.

The children found this activity really engaging because they all love drawing and this inspired them to read the sentences. In addition to that, it made them think of appropriate pictures to illustrate the meaning of the sentence.

Before wrapping up the lesson, we all read the sentences together and I was amazed at how incredibly specific their drawings were. It showed me that they truly understood the sentences that they had read.

I am so pleased that the activities from this course have been so carefully thought out that every time I pick one to experiment, it guarantees success for the children and me as a teacher.
