I coulnd't agree more, Rochelle. I teach non-native speaking children and the first problem we come across is parents who have already taught their babies the 'A B C' song from Sesame Street!! We always have to explain that CAT spells 'saytee' but c a t blends to make cat.
When my children were learning to read we did only what the teacher asked, and that was just to listen to the children read for 5 minutes each evening. Parents seem to be far more involved these days. Only a good idea if the parent/teacher relationship is open.
