Some colleagues and I have been in discussion as to whether we should teach the children cursive writing from the start. We teach mainly Arabic children and their own script appears to be joined. By teaching a cursive b and d, the children are often not so confused as you can only join the d, not the b - as long as they are formed correctly. This does depend on which handwriting programme you use though, (we use the Nelson), as in some cases the b can look like a capital G with an open circle at the end of the down stroke.
