C is a 5 year old, who has just completed FS2, and is having difficulties in reading. She can recognize all the phonic sounds, but has trouble blending them to make words, and gets frustrated & embarrassed in class.
I take C one hour a day, so that I can accelerate her reading & writing skills. I asked C to count how many words there were in the sentence that I had read from her reading book. She eagerly counted correctly, and was very pleased with herself that she got the number correct. I used this as a way of telling her how good she is, thus pointing out a positive. She then went on to sound out the letters and ‘squish’ them together to make words, her confidence growing with each new word. I find that the best approach with her is to start on a positive note (ie show her what she does well), then also end on a positive, by recapping how many words she made phonetically, especially if it is more than her age, which I then make a big deal out of to boost her confidence.
