I am working with a 15 year old girl and have found that having her help build a board game, based on the town we live in, has kept her interest and competative spirit. I've had to take her back to hearing the sounds in words, based on pictures. We play War, using picture cards, where we have to count the number of sounds in the name of the picture, eg 'ball' has three sounds. She increased the competativeness by adding her own descriptions and counting those sounds, too, eg 'big red ball'. I joined in at that point, which made her laugh. At that session we played 4 games which she won! By the end she was counting sounds very well!
Because she is a visual learner, she had learned to build words from letters without having to sound them out. Making sure she vocalises has helped her hear these sounds.
It's very difficult working in this age group but excedingly rewarding, isn't it?!
