It looks like it could be a French-derived word or a word in Indian language. There isn't enough about it to decide. However, further research will probably show the origins of it. You will want to extend the family lines back to at least 1830 and check all the names against the various Cherokee rolls....with an eye to the origins of the Mohawk. If it is a French word, it could point to any of the early French colonies on the Mississippi River, such as St. Charles or St. Genevieve....where Mohawk mixed bloods might have been as a result of the fur trade. Or it could be of Louisiana French derivation, thus Cajun or Acadian. In the normal scheme of things, it would be, perhaps the maiden name of the mother, slightly corrupted from some old French name. Or, as I said before, a word in Indian language. More research is the answer....find the parents and grandparents, and so on.....
