Trying to extend the family back in time may very well help in your search since the Canadian censuses will show the race and religion of any persons wanting to be shown as Indian. If they didn't want to be known as Indian, they might pass for white or other races. You can access the Canadian Censuses, some of them, online at http://www.familysearch.org and at ancestry.com. You can order others on microfilm from the LDS Family History Center in your area. You can find a list of them at familysearch.org. You can see what records are available on film at that site by clicking on "Family History Library Catalog" and doing a Place Search. Let us know how you get along with this.
