Subject: How to research native american ancestor

 My g-g-grandfather served in the Union Regular Army from 1860-1865, 1st Artillery Regiment, "L" Company. He married my g-g-grandmother while stationed in Texas. Her name was Julia and later census records list her birthplace as Texas, Mexico and Florida. We know she was Native American but I don't know where to start looking for her since I don't know what tribe she was from and don't have a birth, marriage or death date. Any suggestions?
