In reply to: JC Lujan 's message, "LOOKING TO FIND INDIAN HERITAGE/ROOTS FOR MY GREAT/GRANDPARENTS IN NEW MEXICO, COYOTE, RIO ARRIBA" on 01:18:57 10/05/05 Wed

The two Indian reservations in Rio Arriba County, NM, Jicarilla and Santa Clara, were not formed until 1930, it appears. Instructions below are for the Jicarilla which seemed closest to Coyote, NM.

First census for the Jicarilla Agency was for births and deaths in the period 1930-1931 and census rolls seem to span the period 1930-1939. Those censuses are on FHL mf #576887 for Jicarilla / Apache Indians.

The above microfilm and others mentioned below can be obtained and viewed at your local LDS Church Family History Center (FHC). To find the FHC closest to you go to http://www.familysearch.org You will find a link on the Home Page to help you locate it.

Microfilm cost about $3.50 each. You can order as many as you need on 4 week, 6 month or Indefinite Loan. Take a copy of this message with the film numbers in it when you go. It's the very best way to gain access to original records that can be found.

From Edward Hill's GUIDE TO RECORDS IN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF THE US RELATING TO AMERICAN INDIANS, pages 147-148: Abiquiu Agency established 1854 for the Capote Ute & Jicarilla Apache of NM; Cimarron Agency est. 1862 for the Capote and Wimiunche Ute; Cimarron & Abiquiu Agencies were consolidated with Pueblo Agency in 1876 & 1878, respectively; Ute Indians moved to Southern Ute Agnecy in CO in 1878; Jicarilla Apache moved from Cimarron to the Abiquiu Agency; Cimarrow Agency was discontinued but the farmer in charge was assigned to Abiquiu Agency which was re-named the Jicarilla Agency in 1881.

In 1882 supervision of the Jicarilla Agency transferred from the Pueblo Agency to the Mescalero Agency and the following year the Jicarilla Apache moved to the Mescalero Reservation in southern New Mexico.

There are records of correspondence and letters at the FARC in Denver ranging from 1869 to 1882 mostly for Abiquiu. These are usually not very useful to genealogists and require a great deal of reading for very little useful information.

Additional records from the LDS FHC collections:

Jicarilla Agency for Jicarilla and Pueblo Indians

Film #1275623 (item 21) - School Records and Censuses 1923-1926

Film @1275624 - School Records and Censuses 1886-1925; Births and Deaths 1924-1925; Letters, deeds 1910-1911; leases/allotments 1910-1911; misc. 1910-1926

Film #1275625 - School, employees, misc. 1886-1898

Film #1275626 (Items 1-4) - School Records and Censuses 1882-1935; Misc 1878-1885

These School and miscellaneious records can be very useful.

Now, if your family does not belong to records for that reservation, try others. Use the Family History Library Catalog at your local FHC to find others. Let the librarian there see the information you sent to me and let them teach you how to do genealogy. It's free and they will not try to get you to join their church.

If you don't want to do this work yourself, I can recommend a good, honest professional who will do it for you for a fee.

Good luck and good hunting. Please let us know on the board how you did. KD
