I am sure that many of us collectively have thoughts on how WCBS FM could have been a better radio station during its oldies programming. We probably together could talk for hours about when the station sounded the best but the reality is that not only is it gone but many groups of listeners are not being served by New York radio in general.

We have not had a standards station since 1998. A country station has not been available for those that like that type of music since 1996. Even modern rock or "alternative" as some people call it is not represented as 92.3 FM is now Free FM with a negative sounding talk format for young people.

The thing that really bothers me is this. I have kept up with radio for 49 years. I have seen many stations and formats come and go around the country. Since June of last year, I have never seen as much of a push to get a specific kind of music off the dial i.e. oldies.

I think when Infinity Broadcasting or CBS Radio or whatever they want to call it this week dropped the music in New York and Chicago, other group ownerstook the attitude that they must know so oldies must go away elsewhere.

To many in radio are sheep and just do what everyone else does.

The oldies format has years to go and when someone comes along and does it the right way it will have a devoted audience that will support any station that puts it on the air and the advertisers too.
