In reply to: Larry 's message, "Re: Steve O'brien Interview" on Thursday, June 08, 07:33:33pm

Of all the weekend and/or fill-in personalities that ever worked in the 33-year history of Oldies WCBS-FM, I always eagerly awaited to hear these two individuals to come on the air, and as really soon as possible: Pat St. John (now at Classic Rock WAXQ-FM) and Steve O'Brien.

To me, Steve was a terrific on-air jock, with such an easy style and relaxed delivery, as well as with a witty, sometimes warped sense of humor. He sometimes made some good natured barbs at some of his fellow colleagues, such as the one, as an example, about towards the station's traffic reporter the late Dennis O'Mara, whom Steve claimed that he was the only person known on earth to forget the lyrics of "99 Beer Bottles On The Wall"!

I myself have a bit of partial connection to Steve O'Brien, because he was the warm-up and voice-over announcer of my all-time favorite television game show "The $20,000 Pyramid" on ABC-TV in 1980 (and its brief syndicated run as "The $50,000 Pyramid" a year later). Here, I had seen Steve at work a few times in person when the program was videotaped at that network's Studio TV-15 on West 58th Street in Manhattan, while I was a show audience regular there.

For those viewers who happened to see the last ABC-TV daytime episode of "Pyramid" on that Friday, June 27, 1980, that was Steve O'Brien (although the camera only showed his back) who came on the stage, after he read the consolation prize fee plugs, and walk over to the Winner's Circle, where he shook hands and talked to celebrity guest Bill Cullen there. Thank goodness, I have that particular episode in my own personal videotape archives.

Thank goodness I did hear at long last Steve O'Brien back one day back in April of this past year at his new gig via WMGQ-FM 98.3, and glad for him as a fan that he secured and landed employment after the format flip at 'CBS-FM. While I hope he has many years of success over there at that station in suburban New Jersey, I am wishing he will come back again to the airwaves on any New York City station...regardless of the format.
