I recall a buddy of mine -- we've known each other since 5th grade -- mentioning that it 'broke his heart' back in the EIGHTIES when 'KB switched format from music to something else..... business talk, I think.

WOWO kept the music faith pretty long. (I first heard 'Money For Nothing' by Dire Straits on WOWO, a terrific tune that they found compatible with their audience). WBT Charlotte was another 'clear' that sounded darned good in the car when they were in their music/nostlagia days. WCKY/WSAI was another that sold out. And for a while there, with WPTR 1540 doing Standards, the top of the dial was pretty much a top-down throwback to the good old days.

Evidently we fringe listeners in the northeast don't amount to many. Or we didn't 'respond' to advertisers the way younger demos do. The debate on the latter can rage until Arbitron freezes over, but the grislier fact is that there are fewer new listeners replenishing the music radio ranks either on AM or FM.

There is considerable debate as to whether WWKB is going to do any better revenue-wise with (yawn) another non-music format. Time will tell. But would it hurt these owners so much to do what WABC does on Saturday night, only after 7PM every night when they know they actually have an audience? Jackson Armstrong can voicetrack the thing in a half an hour .... then it's Joey all night. Why is this neurosurgery to these owners? Why is this 'music' thing some graceless, clumsy, lost art to them? Don't they realize that the deprivation of the adolescent/childhood communications link *** with nothing to replace it!!*** is going to wind up biting them right where they don't want to be bitten?
