Oldies especially when presented right can still be mass appeal.
The sad reality is that people making the decisions regarding formats and what should and should not be heard don't get it.

I have never seen as concentrated an effort being taken around the country to kill a style of music and presentation on regular over the air radio.

I maintain that WCBS FM had the most loyal audience of any radio station in New York. They knew everything about what was going on over the air. Isn't that what you want when responding to businesses that advertise their services on your radio station?
