I know I that this explanation my be a bit oversimplified, but here it goes:
The HD signal is not a subcarrier but an 'overlay'. It exists in the guard bands on either side of the main signal (the signal being the carrier, modulation sidebands and all subcarriers and pilot signals). The plan os to occupy the space which is unused up to the limit of the FCC authorized channel bandwidth. A technique called OFDM is used in a clever way to stay within the channel "mask".
