Essentially, then, a station with an HD signal can put out three signals max? Sort of like the three-phase hand gesture -- thumb up, index finger straight, middle finger sideways -- which goes in three separate directions?

Or maybe, less incoheretly, described as a grounded three-prong electric drill plug that uses the space in between the three prongs to regenerate two more sources of current so the user can have three drills?
