As always, Future Productions runs a great show. Numbers are down this year with 37 Teens and 24 Miss, but there are some great competitors especially in Miss which is very hard to predict this year. This was one of the first years where I would say the SS bodies were better in Miss than in Teen. I was surprised to see so many out of shape teenagers. Don’t shoot the messager, I am just being honest. I would say the best Teen in SS was Alexandra Meuwissen closely followed by Hayley O’Brien and next Ashley Johnson.

Best SS for Miss would probably go to Kristina Ferdig and there are a number of girls who would be in spot #2 for SS (in alphabetical order because I honestly can’t pick one): Courtney Basara, RaeAnne Gleason, Leslie McConn, Casandra Moore, Arielle Peterson, Brooke Peterson. There were some great bodies and plenty of tall girls, which makes Miss so difficult to predict.

In EG, the Teen standouts were Tatum Miller and Haley O’Brien. Tatum’s gown was an average gown but she made it work and looked great. Haley was classic in a white and gold strapless sequined gown and she is my pick to win the Teen title. In Teen there were a number of similar looking white gowns with rhinestoned lace bodices with plain white bottoms which made it hard to remember who was wearing what. Other Teens I liked were Ashley Johnson, Danielle Joiner, and Alexandra Meuwissen.

In Miss EG, there were so many strong contestants but I felt that the two standouts were Courtney Basara and Arielle Peterson. Courtney was wearing Alicia Blanco – Miss Arizona USA’s gown that she wore at Miss USA and it was very pretty on her but a bit too short which brought the focus from her pretty face to her feet. Arielle was wearing a white beaded halter gown that was classically pretty and made her figure look incredible. Other Miss strong in EG (in alphabetical order): Brianne Anderson, Ava Beilke (disliked her gown but still a pretty girl), Danielle Epps, Kristina Ferdig, Leslie McConn, Casandra Moore, Courtney Rishavy, Ali Schulz, Chrissy Zamora. Returnees who were much improved from last year are Danielle Epps, Leslie McConn, Courtney Rishavy, and Ali Schulz.

Teen is a lot easier to predict and here are my teen picks based on last night.

WINNER: HALEY O'BRIEN – the clear winner to me as she has the height, body, and face plus a great overall presentation
1st RU ASHLEY JOHNSON – strong on stage and a unique face
2nd RU DANIELLE JOINER – came across a little too pageanty for my taste but she could also win or be 1st RU
3rd RU TATUM MILLER – a pleasant surprise
4th RU ALEXANDRA MEUWISSEN – unbelievable figure but an ill-fitting dress might hurt

REMAINING TOP 10 MN TEEN PREDICTIONS
ESTHER ABRAHAMSO – good in EG but not so much in SS
TYLER BRAMWELL
LISA HOLMAN - reminds me of Taylor Fitch (MAO Outstanding Teen 2008)
DANIELLE HOOPER – lots of potential
KAITLYN KVEENE – cute girl but not particularly strong in SS
ELIZABETH LINDEMANN
ALEXANDRA MEUWISSEN – best SS figure and great gown but it was too big on her and needed alterations
VICTORIA NEWSOM – really unique looking girl who was another top pick in gown, I could see her slip into Top 5
TATUM PAYNE
KELSI SCHUELKE
JESSICA WESTLUND

Miss predictions are REALLY hard because so many of them are interchangeable and it really depends on if the judges are looking for a girl to do well at Miss USA or if they want a really nice Miss Minnesota. If they want someone to do well at Miss USA, then they will pick someone with an amazing face, height, and terrific figure. In that case I would give it to either Courtney Basara or Arielle Peterson. If they want the great state titleholder, then Danielle Epps would be a good choice. She is quite short and would probably hurt her at Miss USA. However she is clearly very personable and cute and would be a great titleholder for the state of Minnesota. There are a NUMBER of girls who could win Miss and it is really anyone’s game at this point. There are about 10 girls I think who could EASILY make Top 5!

WINNER/1st RU (interchangeable): COURTNEY BASARA AND/OR ARIELLE PETERSON. There are certainly other girls who could be right in here, but if I had to pick these would probably be my top two. However if you asked me in an hour, I might have completely different picks—that's how tight the Miss competition is.
2nd RU DANIELLE EPPS – looks her best ever but her lack of height is very noticeable with so many tall girls. I would love to see her pull it off though.
3rd RU COURTNEY RISHAVY – Noticeably thinner than last year with a better gown choice but needs polishing.
4th RU LESLIE MCCONN – Much improved over last year but a bit cold on stage

REMAINING MN MISS TOP 10 PREDICTIONS
BRIANNE ANDERSON - looks good but she is so petite however she could easily make Top 5
AVA BEILKE – pretty girl who could easily slip into Top 5 but her odd gown choice (it looked like CD’s were dangling from it) could be a deciding factor that might hurt her
ANGEL CECERE – VERY muscular and a little too thick, but interesting looking girl
KRISTINA FERDIG – incredible figure and very cute, but doesn’t have “the face” Miss USA wants
RAEANNE GLEASON – great in SS and could easily make Top 5
CAITLIN FOSTER – REALLY strange peacock gown but she should make Top 15
CASANDRA MOORE – tall, pretty girl but needs more pizzazz on stage, but could easily make Top 5
BROOKE PETERSON – another really odd gown, gold lame’ is never a good thing but wow what a body!
ALI SCHULZ – much improved from last year but probably the shortest girl in the pageant with very short legs. Toned but her lack of height will really hurt her
CHRISSY ZAMORA – she needs work but has a great face and could slip into the Top 5. She is my dark horse prediction

Even though there are considerably fewer contestants in the Miss division, it is much harder to pick at Top 15 in Miss than in Teen, where I actually struggled to come up with 15. It will be an interesting final show and I can’t wait to see who wins. I think Minnesota will have two strong titleholders this year no matter who is crowned!

Hello!I am a pageant prep coach specializing in modeling, talent, interview for all ages. Phone coaching is also available. I am a graduate of Savannah Technical College with a degree in Paralegal Studies. I had the glorious opportunity to compete in the Miss Georgia Pageant system holding the titles of: Miss Emanuel County, Miss South Central Georgia, Miss South Georgia, Miss Music City, and Miss Southeast Georgia. During the five times that I competed on the big stage, I was named preliminary talent winner three different times, Top 15 semi-finalist, and Top 10 finalist. After aging out, I finished school and began coaching and choreographing for girls here Georgia. But my goal is to use my experience with pageantry and help those contestants better themselves not only in pageantry but in life all over not only here in Georgia. If there are anymore questions, please email me. Thank you! Marsha Moore.

Hello Minnesota!

My name is Katlyn Ziegler and I am honored to introduce myself to you as Miss Minnesota’s Outstanding Teen 2009! Time has already flown by and it has been nearly a month since the crown was placed on my head. I have already had the opportunity of meeting many new people and I look forward to exploring Minnesota even more as my year continues.

I have lived in Coon Rapids, a suburb about 30 minutes north of the Twin Cities, for all my life. Coon Rapids is home to over 65,000 residents. My City has been noted in Money Magazine's 2006 Best Places to Live as “… a city with many strengths. It has the advantages of a large city with a small town feel. It has affordable housing, low taxes, quality education, outstanding community involvement and volunteerism and is conveniently located with access to major highways to connect to the entire metropolitan region.” I truly believe my family and I belong to a tight-knit and generous city with sense of civic pride and commitment. I currently am enrolled at Coon Rapids High School and will be entering my sophomore year in the fall. Living in such a large city has opened me up to many different experiences that have helped shape me to be the person I am today.

My platform that I will be working with as Miss Minnesota’s Outstanding Teen 2009 is entitled “Paws for Love,” which first originated when George, my Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and I undertook six months of obedience and training classes to become a Therapy Dog and handler. While George provided love and companionship at home, we learned to rely on each other as our training continued. With high hopes, we were soon tested and evaluated by a certified Therapy Dog International (TDI) Evaluator. The test is developed to show that the dog, as a companion to people, can be a respected member of the community. George and I had to demonstrate confidence and control as we completed the eleven-step course. Our dedication and hard work was rewarded, as we became one of the youngest qualified members of TDI and now proudly sport our TDI tags.

TDI is a volunteer group organized to provide qualified handlers and their Therapy Dogs for visits at institutions, facilities, and anywhere else a Therapy Dog is needed. This organization is based on the clinical proof that petting, touching, and talking with dogs will lower patients’ blood pressure, relieve stress, and ease depression. With these facts, it is important that hospitals and other institutions are aware of the importance Therapy Dog visits have on their patients. Over 15,000 dogs are registered with TDI in all 50 states, Canada, and several other countries. Through TDI, I have provided comfort and companionship by sharing my Corgi, George, with patients in statewide medical facilities and George certainly does leave an ear-to-ear smile and an indelible mark.

Besides the diligent work I have been doing with my platform, I have also been preparing to compete at Miss America’s Outstanding Teen in August. From the time the crown was placed on my head, I have had only 6 short weeks to ready myself for the national competition. My preparation has included many hours a week pounding my heart out to perfect my piano piece for the talent portion, the endless stack of paperwork required to compete, the many trips to the gym, and shopping for new gowns, definitely my favorite part. Fortunately, I have had amazing love and support. First and foremost—Mom; she has been by my side every step of the way. Words cannot express how much I appreciate her continuous strive for me to succeed on the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen stage. As the bills keep coming, she only says, “It’s a once in a lifetime chance.” Thanks Mom. Furthermore, my director, Diane Buszta has given me the guidance and reassurance I have needed to help shape me into the young woman I dreamt I would be. She is VERY hard working and will make the Miss Minnesota’s Outstanding Teen program successful. There have been many other people that have helped me along my journey and I would like to take the time to thank every one of you for your time and commitment.

I would also like to thank our outstanding sponsors for supporting our program. It is these sponsors that allow the Miss Minnesota’s Outstanding Teen organization to nurture and build the scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement of our nation’s youth. Our gratefulness to you goes beyond words.

Furthermore, I am looking forward to the year ahead with my “big sister” Brooke Kilgarriff, Miss Minnesota 2009. I have had the opportunity to spend some time with you already and I am looking forward to the many memories we will share. You truly are a beautiful, talented, and confident woman. You possess all the qualities that are associated with the Miss America Organization. I can’t wait to go to Las Vegas to cheer you on at Miss America!

Finally, to the state of Minnesota: I am so proud to be your representative. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms truly showing our “Minnesota nice.” With this said, I would like to leave you with a quote by former U.S. Surgeon General, Arthur J. Kropp. He states:

"The American ideal is not that we all agree with each other, or even like each other, every minute of the day. It is rather that we will respect each other's rights, especially the right to be different, and that, at the end of the day, we will understand that we are one people, one country, and one community, and that our well-being is inextricably bound up with the well-being of each and every one of our fellow citizens."

Minnesota is without a doubt the ideal state. It is here, that I feel at home. Thank you Minnesota and I look forward to the year to come.

In all sincerity,

Katlyn Ziegler

Subject: Austin Native Is First Runner-up To Miss MN

Austin native Sara Larson has no regrets about the outcome of the 2009 Miss Minnesota pageant. Larson was named first runner-up at the pageant held June 20 in Eden Prairie. Of the 17 contestants competing, Brooke Kilgarriff of Eagan won the title. Miss Minnesota 2008 Angela McDermott, also from Austin, crowned Kilgarriff, who will compete in the Miss America competition in January. "Brooke will do a wonderful job," said Larson. "I wouldn't have wanted to share that moment with anyone else." Larson, the daughter of Barry and Pam Larson of Austin, said the pageant was a fantastic experience that bears repeating. "I'm thinking about running again," she said. "The entire week was an absolute blast." She also is considering running in the Miss National Sweetheart Pageant later this year. That pageant, held in Illinois, invites runners-up from the Miss America state pageants to compete for the title of Miss National Sweetheart. "I love (participating in pageants) because it gives me a chance to compete as my whole person," said Larson. "Competing in this system gives you a chance to do the interview, talent, lifestyle and fitness. ... You really feel like you're competing as your whole self, and because of that, you really grow in who you are and how you fit in the world around you." Larson began competing in pageants in 2007 and was crowned Miss Austin that year. She later claimed the winning title in the 2009 Miss Capitol City pageant in St. Paul. Never did Larson imagine she would make it as far as she has in the pageant industry. "I remember when I walked out of the Miss Austin pageant and I was so ecstatic. I didn't imagine there was a broader world beyond Miss Austin," said Larson. She credits McDermott for encouraging her to continue competing. "I decided to go for it, and seven months later, I'm first runner-up for Miss Minnesota. It's pretty surreal," said Larson. Entering her junior year at Bethel University in St. Paul, Larson is majoring in biochemistry/molecular biology and chemistry and hopes to become a pediatrician. She lives in New Brighton.
