A convicted child rapist posed as a good Samaritan before attacking a woman at a Wareham Wal-Mart on Friday night, police said.

Lance E. Porter, 36, of Wareham lured the victim from her car by telling her she had left bags on the roof, then grabbed her, pushing her up against the side of a nearby van at about 10:15 p.m., police said. He tried to force her into his car, but the brave 36-year-old fought him off, police said.

Porter is registered as a Level 3 sex offender, the classification for those considered most likely to commit another crime.

Porter was arrested at his home after the victim and several witnesses gave police a physical and vehicle description. The victim was also able to provide a partial plate number.

“She fought him off by biting, screaming, yelling for help and was able to provide police with key information on her attacker,” Chief Richard Stanley said in a press release.

The victim was not seriously injured, police said.

Porter, who is being held on $100,000 bail and is charged with kidnapping, assault and battery, and attempted rape, will be arraigned at Wareham District Court tomorrow.

In 1996, Porter was convicted of rape of a child with force and kidnapping. He served 12 years and is currently on probation, police said.

Friday’s alleged attack came three years after Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz unsuccessfully asked a superior court judge to keep Porter locked up under a law that allows for civil commitment for sex offenders still considered a threat, according to a 2007 report in the Patriot Ledger. According to the report, two Bridgewater State Hospital doctors ruled that Porter was not sexually dangerous.

“I don’t feel as though I pose a threat,” Porter told the Ledger at the time. “I feel as though I’ve paid my debt.”

According to a 1996 Ledger article on Porter’s trial, Porter was 20 when he dragged a 14-year-old girl into his van, drove into the woods, forced her to perform oral sex, then raped and sodomized her. He threatened to kill the girl if she told anyone what had happened.
