Subject: Seat Belt Update

Committee votes to let police stop vehicles for seat belt violations

The Legislature's budget committee on Thursday agreed with Gov. Jim Doyle's plan to let law officers statewide stop vehicles if they suspect passengers are not wearing seat belts.

A 14-1 vote of the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee added the change to the proposed 2009-'11 state budget, which the full Legislature will vote on this summer.

The Legislature is expected to agree to it, however.

If the change becomes law by July 1, state government stands to get between $15 million and $18 million more in federal aid - money it desperately needs to close budget shortfalls.

The committee also voted to keep the forfeiture for seat-belt violations at $10. Doyle had recommended raising it to $25. »Read Full Article
