 Greg, don't give up on your lens. Use an orbital sander with 220 grit paper. Get it to a smooth uniform feel. Than switch to 600 grit and than to 1500 grit. Use wet/dry paper with water. After this point, you can use a buffing wheel or by hand with polishing compound. Comes out nice.
