There will be no ranking next year at Miss Alabama. It starts in 2016 for state pageants. We can thank Kira, our current Miss America for this blessing. The higher ups were not happy with her win so restricted the entire scoring system including getting rid of the ranking. I am so glad there is no more ranking.

If this is true, how does it really change anything? This has always been a subjective contest. It remains a subjective contest even with the final ballot removed. It's a fact that people never agree 100% on how a contestant should be scored.

In my opinion, it should have never changed to final ballot selecting the winner. In other "point-based" contests, the points are the final determining factor and that is how it should be with this "point-based" contest too. I'm glad to see it but it didn't come back soon enough for me!

If Miss America is doing away with the final ranking I hope they will also let all of the top 12-15 complete all competition phases before making a cut. I don't understand why in the world they have made cuts just prior to the talent phase when talent carries the highest percentage of the overall score.

Miss America and "cuts" are all about TV ratings. Trying to make it like "reality shows" - Just my opinion, but think making Top 12 sit there and elilminating 2 on the air goes on the borderline of cruel. These ladies deserve better.

As for the Final Ballot - "cream usually rises to the top" and it is so easy for a judge to play games - Glad it's gone!

Just my humble opinion -

Yes, it is true this year. They sent a letter to the state directors and they told everyone at the meetings in Orlando. Not sure how long this will carry over.

I don't get it.. Does this mean no top 15..10..ect or that the highest score wins instead of winner being hand picked from top 5 scores?

Well, Duh, that should have happened years ago! Instead of the top five scores and picked their favorite girl. It's unfair. New scoring should insure the highest score gets the title

I wonder how many times we would have had a different title holder if Thai was done years ago?

Since the ranking doesn't come into play any more, I am praying for high scores for Meg!

So prelim winners going into the finals will already have an advantage.

We would have had Shellie STreet instead of Ashley Davis, and definitely not Courtney Porter!!!!! And Coleen Burns as well!

So the ranking was removed and as predicted there are still people saying the judges got it wrong. Just read a piece whose author ctritized the selection of Miss GA because she stumbled during her evening gown walk and she got twenty extra seconds to answer her question by having it re read. Yesterday in an interview on FOX with Gritchen she stated she is a theatre student and had no idea what her question was even about. So for this people are saying the wrong representative was selected. The article was shallow because obviously the writer has no clue what the Miss America program is about and how Miss GA's total score came together to indicate she would become Miss America. Ranking or just scores, there will always be disagreement over this selection process because it is SUBJECTIVE. I know it, you know it. I am good with it. Congratulations to Betty! May she have a fabulous year and may our communities be blessed by her selfless service to others.

I am happy with our winner BUT she is not an interview queen. She can get through an interview but it was probably the weakest of the top 7. She is beautiful though.

Betty is real; after watching her on several tv programs, I can see how the judges loved her.

I adore Meg but she went too far in her OSQ answer; she could just have stated that Trump was an entertainer and she hoped voters would give serious consideration to whom they voted in office. I know she held back on her dance on finals night probably due to the fall in prelims but she is an incredible dancer with excellent technique.

Meg is a great Miss Alabama and has a bright future ahead!

Ranking has kept many DESERVING girls from wearing the crown and given many UNDESERVING girls the crown....so glad it is gone! Let the TRUE high scorer win! No more "sympathy" story wins! Outstanding Teen and Junior Miss or DYW (silly to change their name!) need to change too!

Now let's give the girls their scores from each judge so they will know where they need improvement! Stop PROTECTING the judges; if they are qualified, they should be able to defend their scoring!

Make the Miss America system transparent where everyone has a fair chance to win!

You all do realize that the final ballot has not always been around, right?

I thought Meg did good on her dance...but that was the first time I had seen her dance. Also, she was honest in her question. Several of us thought she had the pageant won after that. In the ranking system she would have won, I think.

The final ballot re-appeared in the Miss America system about 8-10 years ago. It is rumored that the ballot system came into play after Erica Dunlap and Ericka Harold were crowned back to back. Many of the white sponsors didn't like those two winners(I don't know why). In an effort to get the results they wanted Miss America switched back to ballot system. With that said, I hate the ballot system because judges low ball girls who they don't want to win. Had there not been a ballot system, there are at least 4 Miss Alabama's that I know wouldn't won.

If I remember correctly the ranking system was in place until the year Julie Hitt/Kym Williams won. Or perhaps it was Angela Callahan's year, but I seem to recall the big change that year was 50% talent. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm loving Betty Cantrell. Beautiful, talented, personable - I'm proud to have her as Miss America. I've also heard complaints about Miss Colorado's monologue and at first I agreed that it wasn't a "technical talent". After seeing her being interviewed and her reasons for doing the monologue to draw attention to dedicated nurses who are saving lives and saying "it was about them - not about me", makes me love her as well. With that in mind, it was a smart choice and it worked so kudos to her. And of course, I'm still lovin our own Meg McGuffin! It seems the calibre of Miss America contestants has kicked up a notch - nice to see that!

The contestant who also wanted to bring her " talent" of science onto the stage also received a non finalist talent award for her science experiment. Will this open the doors for other contestants to bring their professional skills to the stage in the form of monologues? And, will the contestant be judged for her theatrical talent of the monologue delivery or will she judged on the perceived benefit of the skill she talks of but doesn't actually demonstrate? It's an interesting direction that this years recognition of talents will take future contestants. The talent portion is a separate point of the crown from scholarship or service indicating a distinct ability traditionally in some form of the arts, showing another dimension to the contestant. I admire Miss Colorado for saying she wanted to win for being herself and I am a nurse so I understand her passion for her skills and vocation. I am left wondering what this means for cultivating and valuing the ability to perform traditional "talents".

Miss CO had something great to say, it was just the way she spoke about something so important to her, that left me wanting more. If Maya Angelou had ever been in Miss America during her years on earth, she could have won talent hands down by reading the phone book. Why? Because it was the authority, passion and inflection in her voice that gave you chills. Love Miss Co, but she performed her monologue like she was reading a grocery list. No pauses, no inflection and no connection with the audience.

I think the view ladies were attempting to bash the pageant - not a profession - by being rude and critical over a contestant's stage choices - thinking they would poke fun at the validity of the pageant - but failing to recognize that these women are so much more than a pretty dress and a fit lifestyle. The Miss America Contestant is an intelligent modern leader in her profession and in her community with a great since of style and poise - with many talents. I love that an entire profession is the one championing a "beauty contestant" because they know she not just a nurse, she is also the ideal of the American women.
