I wish they could get girls at the University of South Alabama interested. We need to draw more from there. I would think with some recruitment efforts they could get some.

Did the judges rank a final ballot or go with category points only?

Points only won't start on the local level until after the next Miss Alabama Pageant.

What is the issue with this points versus ranking ? Are you trying to hint at something? I notice that it has been mentioned in multiple threads.

Not a hint about anything. Just curious about what is happening now at the prelim level since Miss America did not rank this year. It's a legit question. Thanks to those who have answered.

What does it matter? If judges want to crown someone that they are impressed with in interview, they will score her well in every category.

Well actually there is a difference between the two. There will be no ranking at Miss Alabama 2016, however the locals will continue with the ranking system throughout this year. Ranking is a legal way to cheat. Most often the girls with the highest points are left standing. Ranking produces mediocre winners sometimes. Several Miss Alabamas should thank God for the ranking system.

But before the ranking system judges would give prelim awards to undeserving contestants. So judges who want to do this can still do it under the scores only versus ranking. The ranking was not cheating because there were points assigned and it was part of the scoring process. It was not hidden. Ranking a girl last in the top five to keep her from winning is no different than giving her below a 5 in any category when she deserves much higher. I have judged under both and both work.

I have been told by a judge that in the past, in large competitions, his/her top picks don't always make it into the final five because high and low scores are dropped. That's when a judge likes the ranking because it gives each judge a say in the determination of the winner once the scores reveal the top five.

I like ranking and hope it comes back. MAO is not a talent contest, or a beauty contest, or an academic contest. The goal is to find a role model, an intelligent, well spoken, charismatic young woman who has that something special that cannot be determined by a point system. A pure point system often results in a cold, unrelatable winner who is not approachable or inspiring. Miss America should be so much more than a perfect body and incredible talent.

I disagree,it actually all of the things you said, the pageant is a talent contest, a beauty contest, an academic contest, but added to these things is someone who is relatable, well spoken, and passionate about community service.

I've read through these comments and the one claiming ranking allows for cheating is laughable. This is a subjective contested awarded from the opinions of a very small number of people. How is one cheating if he/she actually gives an opinion to determine a winner when the entire thing, beginning to end, is opinion based??? I like the ranking and the dropping of high/low scrores. I think it adds another level of difficulty to trying to fix an outcome. Judges are often split in their choices on the final ballot and that's why the expected girl does not always win. The winner is then a true representative of all the differing opinions of just five-seven people.

New person here. In fact, it does allow judges to cheat. For example, Contestant 1 Sally is my favorite contestant but her competition is Contestant 2 Mary, So I score Mary as 4th runner up to ensure Sally wins although I know Mary is better or should at least be 1st runner-up. This happens all the time I have heard several judges say they have marked their ballot this way. Since this is a scholarship pageant it should not be ranked, do we rank people that compete for other scholarhsips? Let the young lady with the highest points win the pageant. Stand on your own merit and don't give the judges too much power to change the outcome and that's exactly what the ranking system does!

Question to new person. What happens to Mary in the earlier rounds of competion? Is your judge ethical then to score Mary correctly and only puts his/her bias into play for the ranking? The type of judge you describe can manipulate the score sheet at any point. The system is subjective beginning to end and we count on the judges to do the job ethically from beginning to end. Until there is an objective score system - which I don't know how that could be with the areas being evaluated - there will always be disagreement with an outcome with or with out the ranking.

Also, so one judge gives Mary a fifth place rank and the other four give her your first place rank, Mary wins with a score of 41 rather than a score 45 had your judge ranked her first runner up. Mary still wins.

Also, say your judge really liked Sally in every category and it is this judge's scores that get dropped as the high score - so none of his scores count towards her total. With the other three scores that are kept she comes in second- fitth in the top five. With the ranking all of the judges now have the opportunity to have his/her scores count for who he/ she sees as the winner.

The system isn't perfect but it does pretty well. Judges also have rules for how many pageants a year they can judge so one judge can't manipulate the entire prelim season. I have faith that the judges are there with the best of intentions. If you can't believe that than maybe another program is what you are looking for.
