Adele Naklie Shamis
McComb, MS: Adele Naklie Shamis,
90, died peacefully, January 31, 2006 at 6:35 PM from a heart condition, at
Southwest Regional Medical Center.
Adele was born May 10, 1915, in Douma,
Lebanon, the daughter of Marie and Ellis Naklie. She came to America as a child
with her mother and brother to join her father in Arkansas and later in Miami,
FL. When Adele was twelve years old, her father was killed and it was then that
the son of a family friend came to Arkansas to help her mother operate their
dry goods store. Five years later, that friend became Adele’s late husband,
George J. Shamis. They married in 1932, and honeymooned for two years in California.
After her father-in-law’s death in Louisiana, while traveling back home,
the young couple discovered the beautiful town of McComb, MS. They opened a
ladies dress, apparel and shoe store, named The Hollywood Shop that flourished
for over fifty years. After her husband’s death in 1972, she continued
to work hand in hand with her son, George Ellis.
Adele believed in living life to
the fullest. She had a heart-warming smile for everyone. She was said to have
always looked at life with “rose colored glasses” because she only
saw the beauty in everyone and in everything. She never complained or held grudges.
Her beautiful spirit and positive attitude made her a legend at making people
look and feel beautiful. Adele
won many awards including “Woman of the Year” and numerous trophies
in bridge and other card games. Adele entertained on a grand scale for people
from all over the world. She was never afraid to tackle anything in her life.
Her way was to forgive and
move on. Adele always felt she had God behind her, and also her church, St.
Alphonsus Catholic Church in McComb.
She will be deeply missed by her
dedicated family and friends that loved and admired her. Adele was preceded
in death by her husband George J. Shamis, to whom she was married to for over
40 years, her brother Amele Naklie of McComb in 2003, her grandson, Robert Malham,
and, most recently, in December 2005, by her oldest daughter, Sada Marie Malham,
of Brinkley, AR.
Survivors include her children George
Ellis Shamis of McComb, MS; Carolyn Shamis of Dallas, TX; and Joyce Aboussie
and husband, Dr. Mickey Aboussie of Dallas. And, her legacy continues with 20
grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
Adele wanted to say “Thank
You” to all the people who loved and supported her during her life and
her illness. She loved and lived for the special times shared with family and
friends. She loved McComb and was very proud to be a part of this beautiful
community of McComb.
