- What did everyone think of the "Chicago" inpsired dance drama? -- Denver dancer, 13:56:12 11/22/09 Sun [2]
I thought that the dancing was very good BUT . . . the costumes were too risque! I know there were even a few mothers at our school who were quite upset about it. It saddens me if this is the direction things are going in Irish dance. I don't want to be sitting through a dance drama where all of the people around me are betting if the main dancer was going to fall out of her top!

I have spent the last 8 years as an Irish dance mom. I let my dd try because I wnted her to love Ireland and her heritage. What I got for her was a family school who taught her much more. Our school taught my little one to get on a stage in front of hundreds of people and do her best. They taught her that even if your wig is falling off, have fun, smile and do your best, because in real life, wigs fall off! She has learned her friends truly love her for the person she is, not the level she has achieved. She has learned that these girls will remain her friends through life and they will all dance at each other's weddings. (Although they will have to use their solo dresses because of the cost!) She knows that there are other adults in her life beside mom and dad who care about her and want the best for her even if the best isn't Irish dance. God bless you Claire, Carol and Joan...my little girl would not be the beaultiful young adult she is without you.
Love you...Blondie's Mom

- GREAT Oireachtas venue! -- very pleased, 17:32:18 11/20/09 Fri [1]
I just have to say that the Denver Convention Center is a WONDERFUL venue! Absolutely HUGE! They seriously could hold a Nationals here. It it so spacious. The ballrooms are kind of long and narrow, but I've seen ballrooms at Nationals that have been smaller. And there is a whole other set of ballrooms that could also be used. But there is so much open areas for dancers to practice and/or just get away from the hectic competition for a few minutes. LOVE this venue!

- If 60 Minutes Andy Rooney were writing about the Oireachtas -- Not Andy, but I'll do., 22:00:31 11/19/09 Thu [4]
Did you ever hear about this Irish Dance thing? They have something called the "Oireachtas". Sounds like stomach medicine as in, "Hey Mom, those tacos were too spicy. Do we have any Oireachtas?"
I've been told it comes once a year and is a "major" event. It's held all over the place but no one ever seems to agree on where it should be. Then, like laughing years later about when your wedding cake was accidently sent to a bar mitzvah, people always talk about earlier sites like they would want to live there forever. Some sort of amnesia brought on by the accordian music is my guess.
They have something called the recall. It's supposed to be a big deal and those that do are given the chance to dance again. I'm told that some dads go and also have recall problems such as, "I can't recall why I came here."
This years' Oireachtas is in Denver. I suppose skipping out on the competition to get in a little skiing is out of the question. After all, Pat King is going to be there. No one who truly appreciates accorian music would want to miss that. All you guys at Vail can eat your hearts out.
Good luck to everyone at the Oireachtas.

- Irish Dance Cookies! -- Julie, 16:14:38 11/19/09 Thu [6]
We are not at the Oireachtas this year but my niece, my sister and my mother left this morning. I wanted to send something for my niece as a surprise and to wish her GOOD LUCK. She is only eleven so a bottle on wine is out (althought I'm sure my sister and mother would have enjoyed it)...I thought flowers would be silly since there are only there 2.5 days. So I ended up going on cookiebydesign.com. I couldn't find anything with an Irish dance theme but they did have cute Shamrock cookies. I ended up calling the Aurora store and a gal named Lisa helped me. When I asked about Irish dance ("you wouldn't happen to make a ghillie cookie, would you???") of course she had no idea what I was talking about but she said, "We have a great cookie decorator here...she can do anything. Send me a photo." So, I did. And they delivered a DARLING cookie bouquet to the hotel today for my niece. My sister called and said it is fabulous! They made ghillie cookies!!! So I thought I would pass it on as it sure makes a great gift. I told the gal at the Aurora store that she should tell corporate to feature these on their site (they have a million kinds of cookies). So, I thought I would pass it on. Again: Cookies By Design and they have franchises all over the country. www.cookiesbydesign.com
Best of luck to everyone at the "O"!!! My DD and I will miss being there this year.

- This will be O #5 for us and honestly, I'm so relieved by the time awards come, I don't keep track how long they are. But, once they start, they do try to keep things moving. Also depends on the day (solos or teams). Sorry, it's not the answer you want, but it is what it is - relax and enjoy. (NT) -- A Wr mom, 10:18:38 11/18/09 Wed
- Keep in mind that ALL dancers that recall will be on the stage and recognized individually. They do a good job of keeping it moving, but it obviously, and appropriately, slows a bit for the last 10-15 placings. It takes a while. (NT) -- Don't know exact length, 11:33:59 11/18/09 Wed
- Time will also depend on if they announce your dancer's event first and if you decide to stay till the end. Teams go faster than solos and everything depends on the number of competitors. From start to finish for solos, 2 and a half hours. (NT) -- My best recollection., 11:37:47 11/18/09 Wed
- Keep in mind that you will also be sitting for quite a while before they acually begin annoucing results. If you come early to get seats and watch all the way through the Parade of Champions, you will probably be in the ballroom around 4 hours. (NT) -- It's quite a process., 13:42:52 11/18/09 Wed

- I use a Muslin cover and sleeve covers from Kelso. It protects the dress from itself. Is your rod the pvc or smaller wood dowel? You could maybe pad the dowel with tissue paper where the dress goes over it. (NT) -- good luck!, 08:24:51 11/17/09 Tue
- I have experienced the rod marring fabric and "decrystalling" the dress. Also, depending on the velvet, folding can crease the fabric (creates vertical lines at waist band, gives appearance of poor posture for dancer). For this reason, I don't use the rod. I fold the arms over the back, then fold in half with sleeves inside (front of dress on outside). And I put the dress in the bag upside down, the waist band resting on bottom of bag. Can put a piece of foamcore in the bag to stiffen if needed. Never had a problem with this method! (NT) -- My advice, 10:45:21 11/17/09 Tue
- I have a satin dress smock with sleeves that I keep the dress in at all times. When carrying in the bag, put the dress face down then place the dowel and fold dress over so that the dowel is along the back of the dress, this means no creases in the front of the dress, velvet is fine after many times of folding this way. And if you did happen to get a mark where it was folded, it would be on the back of the dress and covered by the shawl. (NT) -- -, 11:52:46 11/17/09 Tue
- Shameless Plug Alert! The Feis 'n Stuff vendor booth sells a muslin Dress Saver. I always use one to cover dd's dress. It protects all the stones and embroidery from abrasion against other dresses and the bag surface. We won't be at the O, but we will have a booth in Palm Springs next month. Look for us at the booth with the medal banners. (NT) -- Sonia, 08:15:31 11/18/09 Wed

- My thoughts about the Oireachtas -- Thrilled to go., 13:08:28 11/15/09 Sun [10]
Some people below noted their thoughts about going to the Oireachtas so I thought I would share too.
I remember about 7 months after our dd started the teachers and the more experienced dancers were talking about going to Portland for the Oireachtas. I didn't have any idea what they were talking about, or even how to spell it, but they sure were excited. My dd wondered to me more than once whether she would ever get to go to this competition.
It took her another year, but there we were in Los Angeles. I understood the venue was pretty small and it did seem like more trouble than fun, but there she was, on stage, with all these amazing other dancers. My dd was pretty nervous and she felt like she didn't quite belong. She got out there and tried her best, but didn't recall.
That night we tried to go to the awards but it was just so crowded so we left and joined some friends who were likewise trying to get over the disappointment of not recalling.
Not 5 minutes into this gathering did I notice how much fun the girls and we parents were having. The girls were already talking about "next year", wondering where it would be. On the way home the next day, my dd told me how proud she was for getting on stage even though she thought everyone could hear her heart pounding. She was the one who remembered our conversatin the year before where she talked about one day going to the Oireachtas.
This will be our third and I hope everyone has as much fun as we have had at L.A. and Phoenix. My dd likely will not challenge for a world qualifier spot or even top 25, but she thinks she is ready to recall and can't wait. We both have the highest respect for all the great dancers who will be there.
So congratulations to everyone, from those on the podium to those who dance with pounding hearts knowing they are there for the experience.

- Depends on how close your friendship is, the value of the dress, and how much risk you feel you are taking. If not much risk and a friend, then lend it. If high risk or not a friend, then rent it. Good luck :]
For all the dancers, a little advice towards a good Oireachtas:
Don't stress. Remember that you dance because you love it. :D
Placements are not everything.
If you do well, remember to stay humble.
If you wish did better, don't cry..because there are many who would love your place..And there is many who would have loved just to come..
Remember how blessed you are that you have parents who support you and your dancing, and thank them when all is done.
And remember that dancing is fun :]
Due to money issues, this will be the first Oireachtas in nine years I have not attended and I wish you all good luck and a great Oireachtas. I wish I could be there with you :]

- Just my own brief thoughts on Oireachtas. -- just a mom, 09:31:01 11/14/09 Sat [6]
Everyone has worked so hard toward the OIreachtas this year! I am seeing quite a bit of stress, and injuries and illness at our school, and I'm sure others are too!
Please remember that this is an activity that is suppose to be fun. Everyone should "go for it" and do their best but in the end, remember that your results on this ONE day are not going to have huge impact on the rest of your year.
IF you are a contender to qualify for Worlds, then I do understand that the stakes are a bit higher. But if you're not (and that is the position MOST dancers are in, lets be honest) then your placement is really exciting, and important to YOU, but if you don't achieve your goals... rest assured that you can still go back to class, and dance, and compete and do shows and spend time with your friends (the biggest asset of dance, afterall, isn't it?, the friends?).
Your parents will still love you, your friends are still your buds, and your teacher will still care about you and teach you, EVEN IF YOU DON'T RECALL.(and if they don't...well...then THEY are the ones with the problem... not you!).
SO...go to Denver and HAVE A BLAST! Have fun with your friends, and dance your hearts (or lungs! haha) out! Try not to stress about it so much that it takes the fun away! We are proud of all of you and your devotion to this activity!

- Hoping to attend the Oireachtas on Sunday -- Rayna, 20:04:03 11/13/09 Fri [22]
I was a dancer in the southern region a few years ago and I'd love to attend the WRO this year (hopefully with my mom!)...I live about 30 mins from Denver so it's pretty hard to resist the urge to go. I'm excited to see what the dancing looks like outside of YouTube in 2009. The amount of new moves since I quit dancing is astounding! I couldn't have imagined bicycles and genie jumps back in 2004.
I'm going to try to be at the Event Center by 1:30-2pm on Friday and as early as possible on Sunday. Unfortunately i'll be busy on Saturday so i'll have to miss figures.
So! Without causing any arguments, 'cause I remember how easy it is to start them on MB's, which dancers/age groups should I be watching if I want to see some dancers who have placed high at Nationals and/or recalled internationally? I've kept an eye on how the girls from my former region and school have been doing at regional/national/international competitions but I'm quite unfamiliar with the names of any western region dancers who would still be dancing today. Since I figure the names of girls who frequently do well in competition are no secret, hopefully this type of request doesn't seem "creepy" or anything.
Also, how much is the admission price for non-dancers?
Thank you in advance for your help, and good luck to everyone preparing for the O! If you see a tall, twenty-something brunette crying her eyes out without any sign of a camp around her or ID school affiliation, don't worry! It's probably just me, all nostalgic and happy.

- Air travel advice please!! -- wheezy, 08:21:44 11/13/09 Fri [11]
I haven't flown in a long time. Will I have any trouble with medication in my carryon? I have several different things I need. An asthma inhaler (the kind that has a pill in it, that it crushes to be inhaled) and also the standard albuterol inhaler that makes a tiny mist. I also have a nasal decongestant inhaler. I suppose these do have liquid in them.
Anyone have any experience with traveling with these sorts of medication?
I hate to put them in my checked luggage, because if they are lost, I'm in trouble without them. One of the asthma inhalers is expensive... it isn't like I can just run out and get a new one. They cost $100 each, and have a months worth of doses in them.
Thanks for any advise.

- Put them in a 1 quart Ziplock bag with anything else liquid (3.4 oz. or less) that you would like to board the plane with and pull the bag out when you go through the security x-ray machines. My dad does this every week flying to/from Philly. (NT) -- Good luck!, 08:37:39 11/13/09 Fri
- DON'T check meds!!!! You can put them in your carry on. If they are in liquid for just put them in a quart size bag, take out of carry on at security, they can look at it , then put back in carry on. If you just present those items when you go through security there are not issues. (NT) -- CaMom, 08:38:57 11/13/09 Fri
- Also, I think prescriptions should be kept in original pharmacy labeled containers. If you use those day of the week pill containers, you should wait until you arrive to load it up. (NT) -- Right?, 09:03:15 11/13/09 Fri
- thanks you! (NT) -- O,P., 09:05:03 11/13/09 Fri
- But it must be a QUART SIZE zip lock bag--not a gallon bag or a sandwich bag (NT) -- wr mom, 10:03:31 11/13/09 Fri
- If you go to any airlines website, they will have a detailed (some even with pictures) explanation of what is allowed and how it should be packaged (NT) -- play it safe, 10:52:08 11/13/09 Fri
- Make sure the prescription label is on the meds, you should be fine. If you are very worried you could have your MD write a note. (NT) -- RN, 11:04:35 11/13/09 Fri
- If you need to bring an extra bag for medications or medical devices a Dr's letter allows that extra bag. (NT) -- Do it all the time., 11:34:59 11/13/09 Fri
- I kept my abuterol in my purse and put my nasal decongestant in the quart ziplock bag with the rest of my liquid. If you get a freezer bag, instead of a sandwich bag, the plastic has more give and will stretch a little without ripping. -- bbb, 13:47:18 11/13/09 Fri

- Seeking travel advise from Denver Natives again!! -- THANKS!, 08:16:55 11/13/09 Fri [7]
OK. Please tell me if I have it right.
If we want to catch the Skyride Bus (it's a bus? right?) from the Airport to the hotel...
We should catch the AF line? And then get off at Market Street station and catch the 16th street Mall to get closest to the Hotel?
Is that correct. Or should we transfer to the light rail to get closer to the hotel?
THANKS THANKS THANKS!!

- Off topic--But has anyone ever heard of "Star Extras"? My 17 yo dd got an email to go to a casting call for "Eclipse". They want a photo downloaded. Is this for real? Or is this a scam? Counting on all you wonderful dance parents for any insight you might have. I have googled them, but no real info there. -- mom in colorado, 07:09:53 11/13/09 Fri [6]

- Stressed out? -- Ally and Nic, 15:24:41 11/12/09 Thu [1]
Of course you are, it's Oireachtas time! GOOD LUCK to all dancers competing at upcoming Oireachtasi, and all dance parents currently having anxiety attacks ;)
Would some free stuff help? Just tell us what's stressing you out over at our Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Heart-That-Dance/9887371055
TWO gift certificates of $25 will be awarded, one by random draw and one for the best answer, as determined by how much it makes us giggle. We'll do the draw on November 20th, so folks can use their winnings for Christmas presents if they like.
And yes, the gift certificates are for the shop (http://www.iheartthatdance.com) and not for Starbucks or the liquor store, sorry. I'll see what I can do for next year, LOL.

- Paying for teachers to attend "O" -- Curious, 14:07:22 11/12/09 Thu [48]
Do all schools ask their students/families to pay for their teacher (s) to attend the Oireachtas? I am talking about airfare and hotel.

- no. ours does not. (NT) -- nor cal, 16:22:27 11/12/09 Thu
- Of course they do. Either through class fees, or through special assessments. (NT) -- poir, 16:22:37 11/12/09 Thu
- Ours does not either. (NT) -- Another NorCal Mom, 17:18:49 11/12/09 Thu
- Our school doesn't have any special fees. But I think travel money for the teacher may come out of the fundraising account. (NT) -- Denver dancer, 18:05:33 11/12/09 Thu
- Whether you realize it or not, one way or another everyone pays for their teachers to attend the O. Some schools charge a fee, others budget tuition to cover the costs of travel to majors. It makes sense to me. Just be glad you don't have to pay for their time at the O. (NT) -- Fair's fair, 19:33:23 11/12/09 Thu
- Curious -- Wondering how long we can continue? (SAD), 19:44:50 11/12/09 Thu
- We don't pay any extra for our TC's to attend any majors. All cost are out of their own pocket....documented as business expenses on their taxes. (NT) -- no assessments either!!!, 21:04:43 11/12/09 Thu
- I have been asked to pay $100 for every major - for years and years (NT) -- by different teachers, 04:28:49 11/13/09 Fri
- $25 per dancer. I agree it should be a business expense written off on taxes but at the same time, it's not within a parent's control, this isn't something you're told up front when joining a school. Glad our tc isn't gouging like some do. (NT) -- could be worse, 06:04:09 11/13/09 Fri
- I disagree with those that think the TC's should pay out of their personal funds and write it off as a business expense. If you had out of town business meetings to attend, would you expect your company to pay for the trip, or pay out of your own funds? (NT) -- should be paid from the company/school coffers, 06:20:39 11/13/09 Fri
- For other sports in which my kids have participated at an elite level, we are assessed directly for all travel costs of coachss (in some cases, including the lost wages for the coaches while traveling). (NT) -- very expensive, 08:32:17 11/13/09 Fri
- Our dancers are asked to participate in many, many performances throughout the year which our TC is paid for. I think their travel expenses should come out of this and not our pockets. (NT) -- Annoyed, 09:02:57 11/13/09 Fri

- “Champtrax” – a new CD from Mark Arrington. This has some unique features: -- Mark Arrington, 13:26:32 11/12/09 Thu [1]
-The first 12 tracks are An Coimisiun championship length tunes played once, twice, and three times through, so a prelim/open dancer can practice their steps up to three times without stopping and still have a definite ending. If dancing in succession, the tunes change or end when the steps end. The last four tracks are “standard” long tracks of tunes like most feis CDs.
-It’s very traditional, as in The Chieftains, Bothy Band, Altan, De Danann etc.
-I play all the instruments except for the squeaky chair and the bark (see below).
-I didn’t realize until the final mix that my dog Merry (bichon frise), makes an appearance in one of the tunes! The first person to find Merry will receive a free copy of my set dance CD “Kick It Up A Notch!”
- Until the end of the year, you also get one free set dance when you order Champtrax!
It’s available on my site www.markarringtonmusic.com. In a month or so it will be on iTunes.
