- Staying at Prizewinner Level -- Bee, 10:44:12 07/02/09 Thu [12]
Is there a rule that states how long you stay at pw level? My DD has been there for 1.5yrs and is quite happy. She likes to wear her dress, dance, and go to Feis. If she places she is happy, if not she is still happy. She practices, but doesn't knock herself out over it. We are happy with it; our TC is not. The TC would like my DD to work harder so she could move to prelim, but DD is not interested. If she was winning 1sts all the time I could see the need for move, but she isn't. Opinions please!
[ Post a Reply to this Message ][Edit]

- Most kids who are at the PW level and going to compete are looking to move into prelim. Your TC is probably doing what they think they need to do to get your dd to the next level. Have you spoken with the TC about what your child really wants? (NT) -- Mom, 10:54:14 07/02/09 Thu
- Don't move up unless you are ready! I have seen MANY kids pushed up and then they quit cause they just dont like the new level that they never wanted. Been watching it happen for over 10 years. Do what makes the kid happy not anyone else! (NT) -- CAmom, 11:10:45 07/02/09 Thu
- Make sure your teacher knows that you and your dd are happy in PW, and in no rush to move up to prelim. Most people are champing at the bit to move up... so she may assume you feel the same. (NT) -- x, 11:39:22 07/02/09 Thu
- My dd was at PW for quite a while and was happy. Then, several of her friends moved to PC. Then she became more interested in moving up and started practicing on her own at home. She has her first PC competition in July. I'm happy that she was able to go at her own pace and is now ready for the more difficult level because SHE wants to be there. (NT) -- Mum, 13:25:27 07/02/09 Thu
- If she has made it to prizewinner she most likely has the potential to move up- if she moved to PW with firsts and not just a time frame - If she like prizewinner...let her stay there, talk to TC and let her know she is happy and you are happy..dancer may change over time (NT) -- or she may not, 13:46:14 07/02/09 Thu
- As a teacher, I want all of my students to become better dancers. I would be disappointed and disheartened if one of my students was so complacent about her talent. I would still encourage her to work hard and ebcome better, if not to move to PC than to learn the self discipline and pride in a job well done (NT) -- PS isn't scary. PW gets old, 19:19:56 07/02/09 Thu
In addition to all these other good comments.... the dancer shouldn't move out of PW until he/she is winning consistently (getting 1sts). Moving sooner will make PC painful. (NT) -- xx, 07:00:58 07/03/09 Fri

I Love This Board/Feis Nutrition -- BigFan, 07:29:37 07/01/09 Wed [13]
Before I get to my question, I would like to state that I love this board! Having followed it for several months now, I need to say thank you for the perspective it gives me on the IDworld. It is also nice to know that my DD's school is not the only one with the half-crazed TC and bizarre dress rules. As parents we need this reassurance.
My question is about healthy snacks/lunches for feis days. My DD is now competing all day, and pnut butter/jelly on whole wheat is not enough any more. Does anyone have good ideas for healthy snacks and lunches that provide energy to make it through the whole day?

- I try to bring non-messy, easy-to-eat snack foods: cheese sticks, pretzels, grapes, apple slices, carrots, snap peas, crackers, etc. along with the sandwiches. If there's a Jamba juice type place nearby, that could be a treat later in the day. Have dd help choose/pack what you bring to eat. (NT) -- Good luck!, 07:56:56 07/01/09 Wed
- as a dancer, I like apples and string cheese and carrot sticks. They are filling but not heavy, and high in protein and good sugar for all day energy. No sugar highs or crashes. I also love peanut m&ms.. (NT) -- dancer, 08:46:47 07/01/09 Wed
- My dd liked a real turkey or ham sandwich.. toss a couple in a lunch sack with some yogurt and a 1/2 frozen watterbottle---good for all day (NT) -- feisfood bleak somtimes, 14:57:03 07/01/09 Wed
- We make our own version of Egg McMuffins. Fry an egg, toast your english muffin halves, half piece of cheese, wrap in foil for the drive or later at the feis. So yummy when the cheese is melted. (NT) -- no butter, 15:12:10 07/01/09 Wed
- Tuna salad wrapped up in a tortilla with spinach leaves. Grapes and apple slices. The best protein bar is called Pure Protein bars, my dancer loves the chocolate one, we've compared it to all the others. (NT) -- Kerri, 15:45:38 07/01/09 Wed

- Utah Feis Comments -- IDMom, 06:33:33 07/01/09 Wed [9]
My DD danced at the Utah Feis this past weekend - what a great Feis! The venue is good, and the event is well run!!! The Feis is providing the results on Feisworx, instead of us having to order them. My DD placed in some of her dances, but not all. However, whether she placed or not, there was not one comment from any of the judges. The scores were there, but no comments. I have always purchased the results before, and while one judge might not have put down comments, I have never seen this where none judges put down any comments. Did anyone else at Utah have this happent to their dancers?

- There were 4 judges. My DD is a PC, and all 3 judges gave remarks. I know they have less time with the bigger Nov and PW comps, but that still seems strange that there was nothing. At least her scores should tell you something. (NT) -- sorry, 09:16:16 07/01/09 Wed

Join Us! Social Events at the 2009 NAIDCs
In addition to the competition, there's always time for rince, ceol agus craic at the North American Irish Dance Championships.
Don’t let the night end when the competitions are over. Come join us in the Delta A Lobby for your evening’s entertainment after Awards are finished. There will be food for sale towards the start of the evening and a bar for drinks and sodas all evening. Anticipated start time each evening will be 7 pm.
Friday: Sessiún/ Sing-Song
Back by popular demand from last year, but at no cost. That’s right FREE, as are all our evening gatherings this week. If you’re a musician, bring your instrument; if you’re a singer, get your party piece practiced and get set to step up to the microphone; otherwise be ready to join along in the chorus and clap your hands as our fantastic musicians lead the way, as in days of yore.
Saturday: 4th of July
Enjoy the fireworks or relax by the pool!
Sunday: Ceili
Once again our wonderful, hard working musicians will be providing the sound, this time to a called céilí in the Delta A Lobby. You don’t need to be a champion competitor to get up and dance the Siege of Ennis, Stack of Barley or an old time waltz. If you don’t know the dances, we’ll have someone there to tell you what to do. So come one and all and jump in the fun.
Monday: Country & Western Night
We are in the country music capital, for goodness sake! We’ve got a DJ to spin all your country favorites and to get you lined up for some Country Line Dancing. Learn all your boot-scooting moves and have some foot-stomping fun.

- Can anyone tell me why some schools in Socal that are really a good size now do not bother to host a feis, yet go to everyone elses! It seems unfair to me - any ideas why they don't - wouldn't they feel compelled to out of pride at least? Its like always going to someone else house and never bothering to invite back if you ask me- they go to feises I see in high numbers (just look at So Cal summer feis counts) but don't bother doing the work of one themselves..then other school host 2 a year! Wouldn't it be nicer and more in line if every big enough school did their share - we could have more local feises in SoCal! What gives? -- always wondered, and now we need them close by!, 16:21:39 06/22/09 Mon [26]

- McCartan used to have lovely feiseanna, but people complained about every thing they did; first they didn't like changing their dd's costumes on a tennis court (the rubber left black marks on their socks - shocking!), -- Go, volunteers!, 17:05:30 06/22/09 Mon
- I can't think of a large SoCal school that DOESN'T host a feis. (NT) -- and lots of small ones do, 17:20:23 06/22/09 Mon
- I've been at two schools and one hosted a feis, one didn't, the one that hosted a feis was way smaller in numbers of students, Its a lot of work and based on what I saw at previous school, who still doesn't host -its just laziness by TC's - feises are thankless often and huge work, lots of complainers, etc. (NT) -- thanks to all of you who put one on!, 17:42:05 06/22/09 Mon
- Not all schools are cut out to host feisanna. It takes organizational skills and contacts to put on a good one. Even the big name feisanna are losing money in this economy. Thanks to those who still "bite the bullet". (NT) -- One of the "Ros" parents you so graciously mentioned., 17:55:18 06/22/09 Mon
- You are partly right it takes work, but come on thats a cop out - any school of a decent size has enough parents, teen dancers, and a TC can run a school surely they can organize a feis, are you suggesting thats the problem? - I think thats not a fair statement I agree with OP too. Wouldn't we all like to have your stance- then all you who go to our two feises would have nothing to attend! Give me a break! (NT) -- Cooperative effort would be nice - geeez what an attitude, 18:20:28 06/22/09 Mon
- Not all schools possess organizational skills...the parents deserve most of the credit in that dept. The families who volunteer are crucial to the success of any feis. Sometimes the tc's do nothing but give approval to the necessary connections, i.e. FW, adcrg's, etc. (NT) -- sayin', 18:22:01 06/22/09 Mon
- So why do any schools bother yikes - we may lose all feises now...no I think we won't because although they lose money, parents work like dogs - wait, maybe its for the kids, the love of the dance, and to do your share if your kid is in any sport or activity it takes parents to sponsor it financially and volunteer - so the kids can do feises! WOW what an idea sacrifice for the kids - name of the game. (NT) -- thats what amateur sports are like too, 10:23:01 06/23/09 Tue
- I agree - it's the PARENTS who do the majority of the work for any school event - recitals, shows, feises, etc. And, no, not all TC's have the necessary organizational skills to pull off a big event like a feis. Nor do "big" schools have the financial backing needed. Some of us parents are struggling just to pay for needed lessons, dance gear, and the few feises we CAN afford. Maybe the schools should band together and only have 3 or 4 in an area per year. (NT) -- Stretched to the Max., 19:22:20 06/22/09 Mon
- I live in SoCal and feel there are enough feis, let's not put pressure on schools to host more. To be honest I can't afford to attend more than we do now. (NT) -- a-feis-is-a-feis-is-a-feis, 19:32:53 06/22/09 Mon
- What is the real purpose of this post? To make some feel like their school is so much better? To point out perceived slights from other schools? Just to stir the pot because you're bored? Maybe you're tired of your TC demanding more of your time and money to host your schooll's feis? -- I don't get it, 09:37:41 06/23/09 Tue
- I bet the purpose was to vent - the OP is likely tired of watching some do all the work and others just skate along but just like at your kid's school - there are always going to be those who do 90% of the work while the others take full advantage of that and enjoy the labors of others yet do none themselves. The way of the world I guess - too bad for ID, and anyway - if it makes you feel bad about your ID school then do something about it - try hosting or co hosting a feis. I don't think anyone suggested a feis made a school "better" anyway - its just a nice thing to do if your child is enjoying and involved in the sport/activity and we need those volunteers or we have no feises! (NT) -- if your school is offended or hurt change the perception, 10:17:12 06/23/09 Tue
- The socal feis would also have 23% less participants if those small schools didn't attend. Why don't you welcome them for helping to defray costs? I believe Kelly school hosted a recent O and Malone helped host Nans in san diego and helps with HV feis (NT) -- Wish all were welcome, 12:29:31 06/23/09 Tue

- Due to other events scheduled, we didn't plan on this feis anyway, but in checking the schedule today, that's when I noticed the Friday championship dances. I was just surprised that's all. But yes, if we had planned on going, I would have read the syllabus first and then made a decision. But based on long time feis experience, I have never seen a schedule like this, hence my comment above. Again, I do hope it works for the dancers that are registered. DD moved up to OC earlier this year and seems to have a major problem at each of the Champ comps she's danced in since. Flu-like nausea one time, major mistake in steps another, shoe problems and recently falling on stage when no one else falls. She is properly preparing pre-feis and is at class working hard...so is it nerves? She says no. And, how can I help? Any advice for a newbie?

- Ya know... she might have really had the flu... mistakes happen. People slip or trip. I'ld give it a few more feises before I called it an issue. (more) -- xx, 08:01:16 06/22/09 Mon
- I had the same problem when I first got into OC. I had never experienced nerves at feises before, and suddenly I couldn't keep my meals down before going on stage. She may be feeling nervous unconviously because of the higher level of dancing her competitors are at and is probably unknowingly pysching herself up and out. The best way to remedy this that I can reccomend is to attend as many feis as she feels comfortable with. Her confidence level will grow as she gets used to the group that normally attends and competes against her. Also, make sure to set small, reasonable goals for feises. My first year in OC I placed last at every feis. -- Older dancer, 18:41:11 06/28/09 Sun

- Irish Fair Schedule -- Christine Byrne, 11:57:35 06/18/09 Thu [3]
CORRECTIONS to the schedule:
Saturday Tipperary stage 2:15 should read "Prelim Champs 17 & Over (not U 17) and Open Champs U17, U19, and 19& Over
If you do not see your competition numbers on the schedule it is because there were too few competitors in your competition so it was combined with the next age group up.
Thanks and sorry for any inconvenience! For a corrected feis schedule visit our web site: www.aniaracademy.com

- mcdonald's. (NT) -- no joke, 20:57:16 06/17/09 Wed
- yeah i'd like to know too...i'm going :) and i heard someone talk about a really cool local beach that u need to visit but i wont have a car sooo if u have a car we should go together and check it out (NT) -- hahahaha can't wait for the feis!!, 22:48:43 06/17/09 Wed
- The local Hawaiian spots are good. Moco loco, musobi, plate lunch and other local favorites will be better than the tourist fare. McDonalds is much more expensive because EVERYTHING is shipped over from the mainland. They charge for ketchup packets! (NT) -- go local!, 01:32:42 06/18/09 Thu
- There is an amazing japanese place called Ohsho in the Kings Village (next to Burger King) across from the Sheraton on Kaiulani. Cheap and excellent - I always go there for at least 3 meals when I am on vacation! (NT) -- Aussie dancer, 04:29:17 06/18/09 Thu
- They got ya on the food. Went on honeymoon ate at Burger King most days, nights were fancy restaurants. (NT) -- food cost us the most, 07:37:32 06/18/09 Thu
- Pack a soft cooler in your luggage (hopefully your room will have a fridge) and go to a market and get some basics (fruit, juice, muffins etc.). Eat that stuff during the day and have dinner out. That's the only way to not lose your wallet - its all expensive. (NT) -- frequent HI traveler, 08:04:12 06/18/09 Thu
- Ask one of the locals (hotel workers, store clerks, etc.) where they like to go for cheap eats. It may be "off the beaten path", but usually worthwhile. Stay away from any big chain restaurants - try new stuff. (NT) -- have a great trip!, 09:41:21 06/18/09 Thu
- I love the Big City Diner--they have several locations. Good basic food. I still think about their fried rice and how good it was. (NT) -- Hungry!, 10:47:44 06/18/09 Thu
- Costco- prices are the same as the mainland (NT) -- if you like hot dogs and pizza., 10:55:57 06/18/09 Thu
- There is a Cheesecake Factory restaurant right there on the main drag. Same price as home, big portions, could maybe get appetizers and share. (NT) -- love CF, 17:59:29 06/18/09 Thu
- Lost ghillies -- Pike's Peak Feis, 20:28:40 06/17/09 Wed [4]
I left my ghillies backstage at the Pike's Peak Feis. Does anyone have a contact for lost and found? Can't seem to find a name on feisworx. Thanks!

- The syllabus says that there is a requirement of at least 6 competitors for each adult special. Here is my dilemma: Having scaled back the number of feiseanna I attend for financial reasons, I only go to the ones that offer specials. This is my favorite feis by the way! However, if the minimum is not met and there are no specials, there is no real point for me to go. I can understand the requirement, however, I would hate to travel the distance and incur the cost of feis fees and hotel stay only to find that there are no specials! If you cancel the specials would we know ahead of time and would we get a refund if we cancel? (NT) -- Thank you. A worried adult dancer, 22:39:15 06/17/09 Wed
- weren't the adult dancers just on hear a few weeks back complaining over the lack of specials, championships, etc, soem CT's trying to change policies about adult dancers - if there is support for it (numbers that is) it will take place. I was given the impression there were all these adults out there, they meant money to a feis, must include them, etc, etc, etc. So whats the worry if that is really the case - surely they will flock to this feis that has so many offerings for them, if not then that speaks for itself with regards to is it worth it to have adults dance at feises? (NT) -- can't be both ways- show support if you want them, 17:17:47 06/19/09 Fri
- An absolute favorite feis with wonderful adult specials (NT) -- Thank you so much - I'll be there!, 01:37:33 06/18/09 Thu
- Last year - all adult events met the minimums - Please attend. (NT) -- Feis Committee (:)), 07:12:23 06/18/09 Thu
- while I understand adult dancer's concern re: the special, I don't think it's really fair to ask a feis to provide a refund if a special is cancelled (except the cost of that special) because it opens the door to people wanting refunds for all sorts of reasons, i.e.: combined age groups (NT) -- slippery slope, 13:00:27 06/19/09 Fri
- I understand its a bummer but you cannot do refunds. How many times have you gone to a feis, and seen a huge blended special of 40 kids? or had less than 5 in some cases, or a huge group of two age groups combined - people would want refunds left right and center! Its a real bummer for an adult, imagine for a little kid! (NT) -- feises do their best, but refunds won't work, 17:11:35 06/19/09 Fri

- I am pretty sure it depends on the school. Even w/in our school, the teacher makes the decision based on many factors, not just how many firsts. (NT) -- mom, 15:09:22 06/17/09 Wed
- http://www.northamericanfeiscommission.org/guide.pdf just found this "guide" but it is very generic. What is really happening in local schools? (NT) -- OP, 15:14:33 06/17/09 Wed
- In our school, you are supposed to get at least one first in every dance. Most dancers have multiple firsts. Then, you have to have your prelim dances (and set) ready to go which can take awhile. (NT) -- : ), 15:18:39 06/17/09 Wed
- Preliminary Championships are open to those who, at any NAFC recognized Feis: (NT) -- Taken from NAFC eligibility rules, 15:21:11 06/17/09 Wed
- Our school requires 2 first in each of the four main dances (reel, slip jig, treble jig, hornpipe) in PW comps with enough people to count (5). And then it is still up to (NT) -- teacher discretion, 15:35:24 06/17/09 Wed
- At our school you have to have 2 firsts in PW in Reel, Slip Jig, Hornpipe, Treble Jig, and Traditional Set. You have to have at least 5 people in your competition to have the first "count". It is up to the teacher's discretion though. If she notices that someone has potential and only needs one first in her reel, then she may move them up anyways. Or if someone has 6 second places in the hornpipe, she may move them anyways. She let me move moved into PC even though I only had 1 first in my SJ and St. Pats... (NT) -- OC dancer, 19:14:10 06/17/09 Wed
- Forgot to add: Sometimes our TCRG won't move someone up even though they have all the firsts. If she doesn't think they are ready or thinks it will take them a REALLY long time to start placing in PC, she'll have them wait. Also, If the dancer is really young (6 or 7) and have all the firsts but got them in competitions of 5 or 6 kids, then they aren't really ready. (NT) -- OC dancer, 19:18:38 06/17/09 Wed
- I think the rules are so broad out here in the west because for people in some places like, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming there isn't the opportunity to go to many local feisanna. So I think they are leaving it up to the TC to determine if they think a dancer is ready. -- more inside, 07:19:18 06/18/09 Thu
- On the Alternative Message Board (voy 217959) there's a post about how so many used dress sites have disappeared or just aren't updated often, especially when a dress sells. I went looking for some of the sites I used to haunt, and couldn't find them! I could only add 1 site. If anybody has current sites other than DA and IDE they frequent, it would be great if you could add the links to that thread. Thanks! -- The window shopper, 13:41:05 06/17/09 Wed [7]
