  • It was wonderful to see so many WCAN schools do so well. POD of course, and also Matterien, Irwin, ANG, DeDanaan (Fred: 1st !), Watt each with several top placers, NPIDA and Steele had a 14th and 15th, O'Brien had at least 2-3 recallers. I'm sure I am missing some WCAN schools with recallers, no slight intended. Please keep it nice, sincere congratulations to all the wonderful WCAN dancers who competed in Nashville this week !       • Personally, I think it makes a difference having a school like POD in your area. It's brought the other schools up a level. You know how it is, when you can see close up, on a regular basis what the dancing is supposed to look like. Especially for those dancers who never qualified for World's till late in life. They were given a chance to see great dancing close to home. Never underestimate the power of visual stamping. That's why vids aren't allowed. • Is anyone as dissapointed as I and people from my school are, that there is no mini-feis at the O this year? What about all the kids that do team but not solos yet- the U8-U10 kids it WAS going to be a great opportunity for experience but now I guess not! Does anyone know why? Money to run it?   • My dd's have enjoyed mini feis in past years, but this is fine too. It may be a space/time issue. Maybe they don't have enough stages to run a full mini feis without delaying other competitions. Maybe they want to focus on running the regular competitions without the trouble of running an extra competition. I'm ok with the decision even though my younger dd would have done the mini feis.   This was a poem I had from years ago when my twins were competitive figure skaters. Having one twin qualify for
  
  Worlds and the other one never getting out of "States", I felt the need to come up with something that was directed to
  
  each and every skater.
  I adapted it to commend every single DANCER out there. You all work so hard and deserve recognition. You're always a

  My twins are in their 30's now & all but a few of the dozens of trophies, medals and plaques are gone, but the fond
  
  memories they made with family & friends will be treasured forever : )
  FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS BUT GATHER PRECIOUS MEMORIES ALONG THE WAY!
  
  "THE PODIUM"
  
  To me, the podium is much bigger
  than the one we see three or four dancers
  stand atop of so proudly.
  
  I see the stages at Worlds as a podium,
  upon which each dancer who steps upon it
  can be proclaimed a World Qualifier.
  
  I see the stages at Nationals as a podium,
  upon which each competitor who stand on it
  can be considered a winner.
  
  I see the stages at the Oireachtas as a podium too,
  giving dancers who have mastered many skills
  throughout the season the opportunity to be
  "in the spotlight" by dancing in a championship.
  
  I see the stages at local feishana as being a podium,
  as it provides new dancers a chance
  to "be on stage" in front of a crowd of spectators,
  showing off their newly discovered talents.
  
  It's also at "dance-outs" and floors at the studios,
  in our kitchens and basements..churches included ; )
  Even sidewalks and beaches,
  stores and mall halls aren't excluded!
  
  So, the podium, at least in my eyes,
  is much bigger than the numbered box
  so many dream of standing atop of.
  
  Each time we enter a stage,
  no matter where we are,
  we are actually already standing atop it,
  and we should be thankful that we have
  the dancing skills we do,
  skills that others must settle for

  IDTANA has already heard us. Posted on their board: The IDTANA and the North American Irish Dance Championship's Regional committee works diligently each year to host the largest major Irish dance championship in the world. The North American Irish Dance Championships have grown yearly, not only in the size of the competitions, but also in the artistic success of hosting the actual event. Each year, the next hosting Region adds to the previous Championships, with new and inventive ideas that create an atmosphere of fun, friendship and camaraderie, in what may be a stressful competitive environment for a dancer. This year, amongst other new inventive ideas, the local committee asked each Region to host a "themed" awards night. Although, each of the themed nights would have been handled in a very appropriate, fun and enjoyable manner for dancers of all ages, we understand the legitimate concern that some parents have in regards to the "South Park" theme. Based on this, the "South Park" theme has been reconsidered and a new themed night will be announced Wednesday at the awards ceremony.

  I was surprised to see someone post that a child feised only 8 times a year. My daughter (Nov/PW) is fairly new to ID. This is our second year feising and we did 5 feises last year and will do the same next year. Is it typical to do lots more? Do people fly to feises at this level -- I always assumed that was more for champ kids flying to majors. It would be hard for us (time wise, financially, other kids) to do more than this, and I wonder now that she is at the level where she needs firsts to move up if she will be able to do so w/out feising often.
  
  So I am just curious! Not being judgmental -- I think it's great if people are going to feises a lot, and traveling -- just trying to get an idea of what is the "norm" for someone who is fairly serious about ID. And if any champs want to chime in w/ how often they feis each year that would be great too!

  • I think it depends where you live and how many feisianna are within a close driving range. If we don't travel at least 3 hours away...we could only do 3 a year. First year my dd was in Novice we only did 4 and the next year we did 8 and she moved up in all her dances. Same in PW without 8-10 feis it is hard to get the multiple 1sts her tc required. In her age group could have up to 40 in a dance -percentage oddds needed extra feis to break through. In Prelim we cut back to 5-6 and now in Open (NT) -- know some who do 12-15 a year, 16:35:31 06/28/08 Sat

  • There are 5 feises within a 3 hour drive. When we started we got to about 4. In Novice and prizewinner we added a couple roadtrips to LA with friends. We might have even done 10 one year.     • Also in So.Cal. Our dd is in open and is fortunate to compete in all four majors. The local feises are the best practice for the big events and she would miss seeing her friends if we only went to majors. It is quite a commitment and our financial advisor thinks were crazy.   • We only did 2-3 a year at first, only the local ones (within an hour) that worked with her visitation schedule. Now she loves to feis so 6-7 a year within 2.5 hours drive, so hit them all when possible.   • The dress room there will be set up to accept the payments based on what the seller says they will accept. Based on what I saw at the WRO most sellers were willing to accept a check with all school info. The volunteers will gather all info and hold the payment for the seller. I don't believe there were any problems with bad checks. Most people will not walk around with all that cash and if you are out of town it is hard to go get casheirs checks etc...
