2010 Feis in the Desert -- Feis Committee, 23:51:11 11/11/09 Wed [2]
Registration is open for the 2010 Feis in the Desert, themed “The Heat is On!” This year our event weekend falls on the 3-day Martin Luther King Holiday: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 15, 16 & 17, 2010 - plenty of time to travel and great airfares now! We will again be at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort, Chandler, Arizona. This is a wonderful time of year in Arizona - come in out of the snow and cold, visit relatives, and bask under our sunny skies. Please visit our website, www.feisinthedesert.org – start with our Welcome Letter, then register for competitions and hotel accommodations through the website. All contact information for the Feis Committee is on the website. The schedule of events is up, along with information on our Special Events. Join us Friday evening for a Wine and Cheese Reception and stay to enjoy Irish Entertainment, featuring an “Irish Idol” contest - with the audience as judge! Back by popular demand is the C.E.R.F. (Firemen’s Relief Fund) Double Jig Competition to be held not once but twice! – open to all ages/all levels on Saturday and Sunday – enter for one or both! Everyone comes away with a gift from the Chandler Firefighters! The “Ducts on Parade” Duct Tape competition entries may be turned in both days - the criteria are challenging, Duct Tape Flip Flops? I'm trying to figure out what lens to bring to the "O". Anybody know what the distance is to the stages. I mean, is the distance to the stages similar to the Nationals at the Oprayland in TN?? - I believe there are very strict rules about photography. You should check them out before even considering bringing your camera. For a start, it is not good for the dancers to have photogs hovering about the stage. I frankly believe photography is forbidden of dancers moving on stage. (NT) -- !, 18:08:01 11/11/09 Wed

- Let's assume that the photos will be taken at awards (not during competition) since the point of reference is NAN's and action shots aren't taken there. In past years, the stages are similar to the non-Awards stages at NAN's in Nashville. - It is important to remember not to get in the way of the Feis Photographer/offical photographer. Last year a woman kept jumping in front of the offical photog to get 'her school'. As nice as that is, it is the offical photographer's job to try and get a good picture of everyone. You can take good pictures for your school without interfering with the perhaps one and only chance that someone without a camera has to get a picture of their dancer. As is usual for this type of event, --there will be a few unfortunate (to be delicate) "loss of breakfast" incidents. Can stage workers(bless them) be prepared to reline garbage cans over unfortunate incidents so that noxious fumes don't permeate sidestage as dancers are waiting to dance? I am sure this will reduce a cascade scenario.... Also can towels etc be available as dancers really can't bring gear up as they wait in line.

- Great idea, but I don't think it should be the stage volunteers who should have to change the liner. Should be the mom or dad of the kid who got sick. This is a safety and liability issue in a way (not to mention gross.) If the kid is sick from swine flu and not just nerves, then it is not fair to spread to stage people. New Nerves for oireachtas -- senior dancer, 12:53:27 11/10/09 Tue [8]
I gotta admit, I’m a little nervous! I’m an older dancer traveling by myself to Oireachtas this year. I’ve done all the practicing I can, got my plane tickets and hotel reservations, that’s all taken care of! Besides I’ve done it so many times, its old news. What is really filling me with dread is getting from the airport to the hotel and back again. Because of school I have to fly in late Friday night (I get in around 10 pm.) and fly out on the last flight on Sunday (takes off at 9:02). Does anyone have recommendations on getting from point A to B, or maybe someone is also flying in or out at those times and could one extra person to split a ride with? I just know being with other Irish dancers will ease my nerves a bit lol.

- If you cannot hitch a ride with other dancers, there are pleanty of services you can get off the web. HOWEVER...call the Hyatt Regency and ask to speak with the Concierge Desk. Whether you are or not, tell them you will be staying there and want to know about transportation in from and to the airport that will not have you traveling alone with a driver (if that is your concern). Hall of broken dreams -- Your thoughts?, 20:47:24 11/09/09 Mon [16]
Last year, before my dd had visions of a recall at the Orachtas, I read a post on this board about the "hall of broken dreams". That person wrote about seeing the long faces of dancers coming out of a ballroom and walking down the hall after announcement of the recalls. Now that we are going for the first time, I was thinking that if she doesn't recall that we stay and watch the others. Have you done this? Did it help or further frustrate your daughter?

- the years that I didn't recall I gathered up my stuff, went up to my room, showered, cleaned up, and got my cute outfit on. Then i would go back to the ballrooms to watch my friends and cheer them on. OR go sightseeing. - My advice to you is to wonder what you are going to say when she dances well and then who knows what the result will be. Instead of thinking about the result, maybe focus on the steps she has taken to get here and the steps she is taking toward still better times in the future. If she is going to the Oireachtas for the first time, maybe she is a good PW or newer Prelim dancer. She should make friends of her competitors.   - My 8 year old did not recall at her first O. We handled much like the above poster. We went up to the room...she had a good cry and then we went back down to cheer on her friends. Side note: She has recalled every year since and has qualified for Worlds 2 out of the 3 years possible. Hoping to qualify again. As a dancer matures, their dancing becomes stronger and more refined. - Have a strategy, if possible, to get away from the venue if needed. In Phoenix a number of years ago DD was sad when there was no recall. Fortunately, there was a movie theater nearby. After lunch and a mother-daughter movie she back on track. (NT) -- dance mom, 06:52:38 11/10/09 Tue

  - while people keep saying "Its just Irish Dance", it ISN"T just Irish dance. Its a year of blood sweat and tears. LITERALLY. And it is very important to us dancers to reach our goals. While it is subjective and there are more important things in life, for htis weekend, the recall is number 1. Why is the term "aggressive" so often used with Irish dancing? A dancer can be, strong, stunning, sparkling, potent, endearing, delightful,etc when starting onstage. Is the competition really judged in the first few seconds of the dance, and is that why so many dancers charge towards the judge immediately? I've seen both styles, but never paid attention to dancers results - it's hard enough to keep track of my own dancers!

This year my DD is attending the "O" for the first time as an Open Champ. She's been a few times before as a prelimer, never recalling, but not too far out. I thought this year, as an OC, she might feel less stressed as she's worked hard and proven she is good enough make it to opens. However, I'm finding that she's starting to feel more pressure (from herself) to finally recall this year because she in Opens and aren't open champs suppose to be able to recall (her feelings). How can I help her to get past this? Right now her biggest competitor is herself.

Okay, reading from the Official rules:

A pupil should not be withheld from competition where the change of teacher occurs because of: -
(a) Death of former teacher.
(b) Retirement of former teacher.
(c) Failure of former teacher to re-register with An CoimisiÃºn.
(d) Significant change of place of normal residence of the pupil â€“ travel, time, and expense should be given due
consideration.
(e) Closure of the teacher's class normally attended by the pupil and where that teacher has not another class within a
reasonable distance of the pupil's home.
(f)
Any other circumstance in which the Council or other appropriate authority considers it would be unfair or
contrary to natural justice to insist that the pupil be withheld from competition.

What would you consider a "reasonable distance"? Has anyone moved just far enough that it is a pain and expense to commute to class?

- Most people feel the "reasonable" distance is about 50 miles. This has been what it was traditionally. If you used to spedn 10 minutes going to class, and your move makes that commute 45 or 60 minutes instead, I think that is a big enough change. - Think of "aggressive" as owning the stage and owning your dance. Move around with a sense of purpose. Don't just do the choreography, HIT every part with as much evergy as you can. For those going to their first O, congratulations and good luck!

There is something done at the O that you wouldn't expect and shouldn't miss. Before the awards, while everyone is anxiously waiting and waiting, very loud music is played and the dancers let their pent up energy fly. Kids are dancing to the YMCA and just about every other fun song. They crowd the stage, in front of the stage, the aisles...anywhere there is a flat space.

For those that recalled, it helps ease the tension. For those that do not recall, it is a chance to hang out with friends and forget the disappointment.

My recommendation is NOT to sit in your room eating ice crems and watching pay-per-view. Come down and let your dancer have a ball. It is unique, to say the least.

I'm making a cd for my daughter to practice - but noticed that the speed of the Treble Jig's that I have in itunes varies from 72 to 73. Don't want to mess her up too badly. It there a speed listed for the O's and I've missed it? Thanks for the info.

- the difference between 72 and 73 is negligible, but she should practice to both. That way she can be better prepared for small fluctuations in speed. Things happen. Metronome batteries die. Music isn't always perfect. (NT) -- use both, 12:43:50 11/05/09 Thu
- There's only 16/1000 of a beat per second difference between each beat per minute increase or decrease - too small to notice any change. Try practicing 3 or 4 bpm faster and slower than your intended speed to be ready for a live situation. Also, try practicing with just a metronome - no music.
