Just in case this might be helpful to someone. I just booked at the Crowne Plaza downtown (quite close to the venue) for $79 a night! It was called the "Staycation package". That includes complimentary internet and breakfast for 2!

  - I decided the 2 blocks was not worth it. I remember having to walk in Portland. I hated feeling that I had to kind of stay pu because by the time I went back to the hotel, I would just have to turn around and go back to the convention center. - We're staying just outside of downtown at a place with included breakfast, downtown shuttle and FREE parking. For what parking costs at the downtown hotels for 4 nights, I'm getting the rental car. If the weather was more predictable, we may have not reseved the car and opted for a closeby hotel that we could walk (like Portland which I didn't mind). Pilates for 11 year old dancer -- uamom, 20:15:32 11/04/09 Wed [11]
Anyone have recommendations on a good pilates video for 11 year old champion dancer. I am seeing so many injuries lately for these young kids,it is scary.I have heard many are doing less practicing the reptititive stuff and doing pilates to strengthen their core. A few parents swear their dancers are dancing better with less practice. Pros and Cons, and recommendations please. Thanks all

- I wouldn't do pilates with a video - to be safe you really need a certified trainer in studio. I would strongly recommend yoga for strengthening core and maintaining excellent body balance/control. - We are doing this with our 10 yr. old DD after so many injuries. We have a private pilates instructor for 1/2 hr then our DD does the excercises on her own. It has made a huge difference in her strenght, flexibilty and turn out. (NT) -- teachers seem to understand., 11:27:56 11/05/09 Thu

- Last several years - same 5 judges for first 2 rounds. Hard shoe first, soft shoe second. Just like any Prelim or Open competition - judges rank dancers and Irish points are assigned. Top half of the age group are recalled to dance their set dance - 5 judges, ranked, Irish points. Scores from all 3 rounds are used for final placement.   - Better if your flight arrives at the right time. The bus leaves at set times, so you may be waiting up to an hour. The website has the schedule info. IDTANA Cyril McNiff Scholarship -- IDTANA, 19:21:05 11/03/09 Tue [1]
Since the inception of the Cyril McNiff Scholarship, the IDTANA has proudly awarded over $140,000 to dancers through out North America. The Irish Dance Teacher's Association of North America is proud of the accomplishments of all dancers - not only competitively and artistically - but also academically.

To recognize the accomplishments of these dancers who excel in the classroom and in the dance studio, the IDTANA is proud to offer scholarships totaling $20,000 in 2010 for high school senior students, and those students who are already attending college.

Applications for 2010 are now available at www.idtana.org.

Please note that the application process for 2010 has changed and we ask that you carefully review the information in the application packet for more information.

The Scholarships will be announced in early June, 2010 and a presentation of the scholarship winners will be held at the North American Irish Dance Championships.

- 16th st mall is just blocks away, riverdance is playing at buell theater one block away,check nights not sure how long they are there, tons of restaurants nearby, can walk to avs rink if hokey gam eon, moly brown palace is nearby, cab ride approx 15 mins down speer blvd is musuem natural history and zoo if nice day, it is a nice zoo, aquarium and childrens musuem 5 min cab ride and eilitch, i think open on weekends is 5 mins away, cheesecake factory corner 16th st mall (NT) -- mom, 15:47:31 11/03/09 Tue

I am renting a sightseeing bus on friday nov 20th and have room for 3 extra passengers -- CC, 13:42:42 11/03/09 Tue [1]
the bus will pick us up at the Garden hilton 1400 welton st, and it will be either $50 or $60 for the ride round trip in a 8 passenger bus. There will be tour guide to ask your questions, beautiful sightseeing across the continental divide, stops for photos,snacks and drinks. Pick up is at 8 am drop off at 5:30 pm. Additional fees if you want to

  - This is just false. As a Feis Organizer, you have to gurantee a certain number of rooms to get the rates at a certain price, If you dn't meet your block, then the rate of the venue skyrockets well beyond affordable. - Times are tough. Hotels need bodies staying in their rooms. I've made other reservations a few months ago, but I keep checking since the rates keep dropping. For NANs this year, I saved $130 on my flight reservations (Southwest credit) by checking back in closer to the dates.       - People have the right to correct inaccurate statements. I looked at the schedule in thier feis book and what THEY put up on feisworx. Sunday it said the last thing, awards, would be given out at 2:30pm. They did it at 4:30. That looks like 2 hours late to me. The schedule had an 8 am Sunday start, it didn't start until 8:30. Just becasue someone posted something on a message board that they would be done by 5 you think is ok. I don't. People go by what the feis has posted as their official schedule.         No one slammed her. She has done this more than once. She should know that she's not ready for this. Champs ask for a particular tune at a particular speed. Can you imagine flying in, paying hotel fees, hoping to get the last placement you need to dance at the Regionals, and then the musician messes up? How fare is that?         This fiddler would also start out playing one tune and after 4 measures go into another melody. Some of the tunes were not the best to dance to not just because of the tempo, but they were odd melodies to dance to. Playing for a feis is very different than playing for a gig in a pub, session or concert. I play professionally and would never sell myself as a feis musician since you must be able to play the right melodies, stay on the beat and not rush the music. Our dd had this person, a very nice young lady, at a recent comp and she made timing and note mistakes....she played the wrong notes or just missed them to the point the judge hit the bell. Our TC has given us an overview of the O's (our first) but then someone posted that starting numbers change from round to round. Would some kind soul please explain further.....TC is frazzled and annoyed with my dancers need to know as much as possible beforehand. Anything not anticipated will throw her. Thanks!

- Yes each round has a differnt (random) start number. There will be a chart listing these for each age group in the O. program. So if your dd is competitor #12 and Hard starts with #29, Soft starts with #38, and Sets starts with #5, this will give her an idea of when in the round it will be her turn to dance. What are your thoughts on the way they do the recalls at the O? I don't like the way they make everyone stay in the room until they figure it out, then the sets start within 5 minutes. This doesn't give the first few dancers much time at all to get prepared mentally to say nothing of warming up. By not giving some kind of warning, such as "Recalls will be announced in 10 minutes, allowing messages to get to everyone to come back in, most people stay in the rooms waiting. They sure could do a better job.

Some thoughts about the upcoming Oireachtas for first timers. -- Me., 09:39:01 11/01/09 Sun [4]
Our dd's first Oireachtas was a few years ago. While she didn't let on at the time, she later said that she was pretty nervous from not knownig what to expect. Not having been to the "big show", she got a little doe eyed, as in the doe getting caught in the headlights...

A hint for those going for the first time: Find the more experienced dancers in your school and ask them to discuss their first time. Knowing about how starting numbers are done (it changes from round to round), understanding that there are other dancers, like your dd, who are there for the first time and that first timers that are ready often recall, might help.

Best tip I can leave is to enjoy yourself and not be too surprised if your dancer does very well. Good luck!

- I don't think they're a necessity. I have seen young girls with gigantic earrings which look a bit ridiculous to me and I have seen young ones with lovely earrings that complement their outfit. Hasn't affected her placement at all - in fact, she is placing better since not wearing earrings but that's due to her dancing not her ear gear or lack thereof. Please don't bash here, but I am a mother of a December birthday dancer, which means she can be 2 years younger than her competitors. At this age, do you find that the size and the strength of the dancers are totally different, and do you find that the smaller, much younger kids are at a disadvantage? Has anyone experienced this? And did the little ones catch up or is always a huge difference? I know--this will make her a better dancer, and I can't dwell on it. - When I was coming up through the grades the competitions were aleays split by 2 years. U9, U11, U13, etc. Sometimes I felt at a disadvantage because i was smaller than everybody, even small for my age. I avoided dancing against one girl, because she was quite tall for her age, and could "boss me around" the stage. But I moved up thorugh the grades and I'm now studying for my TCRG. - YES -Physical maturity does make a difference to a certain extent - you will note that growth spurt, and the ones about age 12-15 who are still really growing struggle - but it all evens out after that, But a year or two older at age 12 - HUGE DIFFERENCE IN DEVELOPENT- the physical development, muscle control - it comes more together as they age I found -- especially tough on a late bloomer or a tall legged dancer who is growing while others (older often) can build muscle and perfect, she is trying to keep up with those long bambi legs. - My ddaughter is a Nov birthday and is U8 this year.. started when she was 4.. always was a year or two younger than the actual compeition age.. it helped that she is tall for her age.. but it always encouraged her to work harder.. leap higher ect.. It can get frustrating when they are PWu8 and are dancing PW U10 they are always bigger.. but in the end she has risen to the occasion and has been winning the comps.. even against the older bigger kids! - We are in the same boat, but it is just how it is. I also know that when my U7 PW gets to prelim, the lowest age group is often U10. So, really, she is getting to dance and see the people she will be with for a while. The groups are usually so much bigger, but they just have to go out there with confidence and do their best dance. - I don't think it makes a difference. All of the top dancers in my dd's age group are in the last part of the year. So at Nationals, when they divide the groups from Jan. to June and July to December...all the top dancers in the world and region fall in the later part of the year. - It is a disadvntage now because your dd's large motor skills are still being developed. The older dancers will be further along in their motor development. As she gets older, it won't be an issue. Having said that, I am sorry but competition U8 is worthless. My DD struggled hard for her dress (because of starting out as the baby in U10) while her classmates (U8) all got their dresses ASAP.
