What happens when champ dancers get busy with real-world life--jobs, higher education, other activities, and might be paying their own gas/dance/other expenses? Do they give up dance completely because they don't have time to do both teams/solos, or just not go to majors? -- Western U.S. Region Irish Dancers

It's called life--must make tough choices all along. My dd had to forego Worlds team this year (which ended up placing) because of other committments. Tough choice, but it happens. She didn't give up dance--just the competitive side for a season. (NT) -- It happens., 09:53:40 06/06/08 Fri

  - It's a dilemma, but a choice that has to be made. How important is ID vs other activities? OK to back off ID for awhile if other things need to take center stage for awhile. Or, if ID is more important now, need to let other things go for a time (our DS made that choice--other activities suffered because ID was top of list). Not easy.         I agree with some of what you say. Artistically figure dancing is part of Irish dancing... but financially, the figure classes are usually completely seperate, as are the extra days at Majors... it still comes down to expense-- your ideas of making your tuition inclusive is a step in the right direction.         Because ceili is the heart of irish dancing tradition. It is not just something to goof around with in class when you have some spare time. It is something to take seriously, work hard at and try to perfect. It is just an important part of irish dance as solo dancing. Anyone who fails to see that is a diva. Maybe you have personal reasons not to be on a team, whatever, but if your reasoning is teams just aren't as important as solos, then your attitude is getting in the way.         If your TCRGs don't believe ceili dancing is important part of traditional dancing, then they must not know alot about the history of irish dance. There's a reason the test consists of so much ceili dancing, because CLRG thinks it is an important aspect of the art form to perserve, not just because they want to cram the book. -- g.t.t., 12:10:17 06/11/08 Wed

        At our school, teams aren't as important as solos. There are no ceili classes offered at all during the year. Yet, when the "O" comes around, they haphazardly throw teams together, practice for 2 months, and then wonder why they didn't do better. Why would a dancer want to do teams under these circumstances?   - Nicely, other than costume cost (dress or male outfit) for dancers, our ID school charges minimal for team practices, as in very minimal. They are also held immediately after the prizewinner level classes, and immediately before the champ level classes, so no additional night of driving to and from.
