Subject: But, if a dance quits -- because they aren't allowed to do solos, and CAN'T do teams (cost, time, etc) then that doesn't promote ANY kind of Irish dancing. My dd knows all 6 of the traditional set dances used in competition.... (more)
In reply to: Aine 's message, "Some people think that since teams (ceili dances) are the traditional part of Irish Dancing, its more important to promote and continue the tradition then to keep one dancer doing solos." on 09:47:37 06/07/08 Sat

Should there be a rule saying that no one can learn a Non-traditional set dance until they know ALL of the (approved for competition) traditional set dance???

I know TCRG's that don't know ALL the traditional set dances.

I think that this is just another way for teachers to exercise power over their students... and while they have the right to do it, it just doesn't make SENSE to me. Lots of things in Irish dance don't make much sense to me actually.

Our school is far from perfect... but at least our teacher doesn't seem to be a controll freak, and she does understand that lots of people have budget restraints that keep them from doing EVERYTHING.

I personally think it would be a real shame when a dancer is prevented from dancing or competing solos just because they can't do teams. I also feel that "not liking team dancing" is a valid excuse to not do them. Dancing is suppose to be joyous. If someone is training to be a TCRG, then obviously, they should do the team dances whether they like them or not...to prepare... but that is a small percentage of dancers. Most do it for the love of it.

  • solos are about self that is why they are called solos. If we gave most champs the choice they wouldn't do teams. A requirement to do teams if you're doing solos is a good one. A school can't exist without students and if a school only gears itself towards a few champs it won't last. Teams is to give others a chance to dance at the O and I think it's great for promoting Irish culture. (NT) -- aschoolisn'tjustU, 11:01:18 06/09/08 Mon
  • Wow--you must live high on the hog when you travel with your dancer!! $20 per meal?? And 5 majors per year--who does that?? Even if you do the O, NANs, Worlds & AI, that's only 4 majors. And why is fundraising not an option? Your post is not a true reflection of our experience. Maybe you need to budget better?? (NT) -- --, 08:27:35 06/16/08 Mon
