Ceili used to be the basis of irish dance. Everyone would be taught ceili dancing. Ceili and set dancing is still pretty popular in Ireland. Most of the tours I looked into recently featured a night learning ceili dancing.
Historically, if you were good at ceili dancing, you would be given solo steps. Ceili dancing includes just the basics of irish dance. Strong posture, staying on the toes, strong rhythm, fluid movement.
Like I said, there's a reason all of this is on the test. There is just as much ceili dancing as there is solo dancing, in fact I think a case could be made that ceili makes up a greater portion. Now why do you think that is?
You don't have to believe me, not if you want to. But that would just make you wrong.
Also would you like to elaborate on your apples and oranges comment? Just because you say it,its true?

- Wow, I guess that is just the law of averages then because I've never met a mainstream dance teacher who was against ballet. EVER. I'm not talking about irish dance here, but the regular, mainstream, tap, jazz, shake what you mom gave you, tons of different styles dance studio. I've been involved in that world just as long as I've been involved in irish dance, and I have many peers who do mainstream dancing so my circle is pretty wide, and I've NEVER heard of a single one of them who are against ballet training, and the majority of them require it. -- g.t.t., 12:31:59 06/12/08 Thu
  - OK... on this I will re-state... I mis-understood your statement. I meant that there aren't many IRISH DANCE teachers that require Ballet. I do agree that most other forms of dance (tap, Jazz, modern, ballroom etc.) value, and even require ballet for high level study.
