Everyone else may have already seen this, but it just popped into my mind this morning, how much like a chess game this all is. We have the Queen, Carlotta, the King, Luis, who emerges as more of a force, now they've made Nicholas a Knight! His soldiers are the pawns and there are castles, and there are Bishops or churchly figures like Father Ludovico and the Scottish Chaplin, John de Kinloch who has tripped him up. -- Shamrocks & Stones

Perhaps the Greek with the wooden leg is the other player in this game of chess. I'm not sure what the females would be and I don't remember if there are other major chess pieces since I have never played it. I wonder if DD was a fan. Another thing I noticed this morning is that she uses short choppy sentences for ironic or sarcastic comments, for emphasis would be a better way to state it. Usually her sentences are long and beautifully constructed. I love her sense of humor too. What I don't love is the squirmy feeling that N is doing things behind the readers backs that we might not approve of! Of course, it's also one of the things that keeps us reading and fascinated with N.
