Chapter 45: Tyger, Tyger

Jamie is kidnapped from the infirmary in the middle of the night. He knows he is headed back to Isay and Svetlana’s home. He’s still pretty hazy from the pain meds, but is presented to Isay who tells him about the game, “Tiger, Tiger”. After Jamie changes into the warmer clothes Isay has brought for him, Isay cuts open his previous wound and tells him to run. Jamie is to be the prey.

Jamie pulls upon his past hunting experience as he endeavors through the snow. While he is on the move, he thinks about his friends and loved ones knowing he has been gone longer than he expected. He thinks about his sons and of his past. Suddenly, a bullet whizzes by him and he realizes that sentimentality has no place in this situation.

Just before dawn, Jamie decides it’s time to rest. He finds and acceptable place and hunkers down. He wakes in the early evening and his fever has returned. He leaves his shelter and finds his work to cover his track has been effective and he is now hunting Isay. Then his sixth sense kicks in and he hides, realizing he has come directly upon Isay and his hunting dog. Jamie departs the scene to go find shelter and make a fire.

As he moving through the night he finds a freshly killed stag in his path. As he kneels before it he feels eyes upon him. They are the eyes of a white tiger. Thinking he is a dead man, Jamie is surprised when the tiger turns away and Jamie follows it. It is during this time that he realizes the tiger his hurt as well. The tiger leads him to a hut, where Jamie can eat, rest and enjoy some vodka.

Pamela awakes from a vivid dream. It is a dream of wilderness and snow. She knows she must seek Finaola’s help to understand the dream – it seems more than just dream.

Later, Pamela tells Casey her plan. She and Finola will induce a trance to help Pamela find out if her dreams are connected to Jamie and if he’s in danger. Casey things she’s bought the farm and is against it. He goes for a long walk and finally returns to reluctantly agree to help. He feels he owes Jamie since Jamie didn’t take advantage of Casey and Pamela’s separation.

Chapter 46: All the Colors of the Rainbow…

After a few days of walking on eggshells around each other, Casey and Pamela head to Finola’s cottage. They arrive in the evening and Casey is beside himself with anxiety. Finola explains what is about to occur and Casey’s part in it.

Pamela removes her clothing and her skin is rubbed in with the concoction Finola has created. Casey is then instructed to remove his clothing as well and join Pamela in the bed. As the drugs begin to work on both of them, Casey roots himself into the here and now for fear of losing contact with reality.

Casey finds himself looking through a fog at Jamie’s green eyes. He reaches for his cold frozen hand and questions whether what he is experiencing is real. In that moment he feels the love Jamie has for Pamela and knows that Finola is correct I suggesting that Pamela is the only one who can find Jamie.

The chapter moves to Jamie and we see him struggling to survive. Days have passes since the beginning of this hunt and he has lost track of time. He knows the tiger is following him. He passes out in the snow, but is awoken by the sound of the tiger’s roar. He finds he’s awoken in front of a building. He runs in, the fear of being attacked by the tiger ever-present. He is barely able to get a fire started, but is grateful for the warmth and light. He looks out the window and sees a figure. The figure approaches and he sees that it is a woman. He goes out to warn the woman about the tiger. He goes to retrieve her and realizes that its Pamela.

He knows that this must be some sort of dream. She explains to him that she was having dreams that he was in danger and that she sought Finola’s help. She hands him warm furs and drinks. He starts to wonder if he’s fallen down the Rabbit hole and into Wonderland. Pamela joins him in the furs to warm him and he’s overcome with emotion. As she slips away into the ether, Casey’s booming voice commands him not to die.

Jamie awakes in the infirmary with Violet at his side. She says he’s been in and out of consciousness with his fever for days. Jamie is very confused, but can smell the “strawberries and love” on his hands and gives way to sleep.

Q1. Was Jamie's experience in the snow and being hunted a fevered dream? If so what are your interpretations of the dream?

Q2. Pamela reaches into Jamie's subconcious, dragging Casey there as well. Would you be as brave as Pamela? Do you think she's brave or crazy? :-)

Q3. Finola reads Casey's hand...she comments that she's only see one other hand like it. Did you catch this upon your first reading? Foreshadowing of things to come? And who's hand is like Casey's? (I admit to be confounded by this and worried!)
