Subject: Skillful writing absolutely counts for me and without it, I may not last long enough to get interested in the story. It's jarring to me to be reading along and come upon a silly metaphor or repetitious language. I want to be immersed and transported into that world and don't like being kicked out of it. >>>>>>>>>

I can read fluff and enjoy it when in the right mood and know that's what I'm getting and it sounds like the ladies in this group are more interested in "stories". I have a friend who listens to abridged books on tape for the stories as she cleans house. Couldn't do that with DD or DG ! Diana said at our meeting with her on GFM this summer, that her books can be, and are, read on many levels. It all depends on what you're reading for. These ladies might enjoy The Mermaid's Chair, an interesting story, well-enough written, and discussable. However, it's just simply bad manners to ravage the choice of another the way they do. Perhaps you could gather a different group of folks who are more sensitive and insightful.

  • Nothing new to state here really. Books are a very personal thing I guess. Some books are worth discussing and some are not, but how do you choose? You just have to jump in and give a book a try to know whether it's worthwhile or not. Beautiful language is a joy for me to read. I love poetry, so give me all the allusions and allegories you got! Complex plots are fun for me to decode and dissect. Character-driven stories are fascinating if the characters matter to me. Plot-driven stories can be great if the plot is actually going somewhere rather than wandering in circles. But if what I'm reading is poorly written with lots of repetition and rookie sentence structure, or worse, if it's didactic and preachy, I will put it down in favor of something with real meat. I don't have enough time to waste wading through pulp, with which the bookstores tend to overflow these days. (NT) -- E, 20:02:24 02/24/09 Tue
