Subject: The Granny: Chapters 12 - 16

Thanks to Voy being down, I'm a day behind...I'll try to get the next section posted later tonight


Mountjoy Prison

- “Seven Years”

- Agnes writes a letter to Trevor updating him about Dermot’s sentence and Cathy’s impending birth, but unhappy marriage.

- Trevor himself is very happy living in Cookham with Sue & Tony.

- Dermot struggles in his first weeks in Mountjoy Prison – closing himself off from everyone (including Buster). He spends every evening thinking about his family, the baby that Mary Carter claims is his and the widow Cullen.

- Buster adjusts well, taking a letter writing course. Since his parents won’t communicate with him, Buster begins to write Agnes.

- After many visits, Dermot finally finds the topic that he believes Agnes is avoiding – Mary Carter and the baby.

- Agnes and Dermot have words regarding baby Cormac. After some back and forth, Agnes says, “No son. I don’t want you to be just like Mark, but I don’t want you to be just like your father either!” This sends Dermot into a rage and as he’s being restrained he tells Agnes to never come back.

- In Chapter 14 we learn that Dermot returns all of Agnes’ letters, torn in half, and that Agnes and Buster begin writing regularly. Buster also begins corresponding with Cathy.

- Trevor coaches Sue off the relationship “ledge” and tells his story about “the one that got away”. Sue realizes, and shares, that Nicky from Glasgow is Mary Nicholson.

- Over dinner with Trevor, Sue & Nicky, Tony proposes to Sue. And Trevor presents Maria with the last painting. *sigh*

- Cathy and Buster correspond regularly. Cathy shares with Buster the reality of her marriage and life. She feels a sense of relief at sharing her burdens with him.

- Buster is released from prison. On that same day Dermot finds out from a new inmate that Mary Carter has died of a heroin overdose.
