Chapter 27, The Partnership

Robert arrives at the Kirkpatrick estate in January of 1973 in possession of a letter from Jamie that explains Robert’s role in his business, and how he and Pamela were to work together in the coming months.

Robert and Pamela meet. Robert is immediately impressed with Pamela’s beauty as well as her business acumen. He is confused, though, as to why Jamie chose her to represent the Kirkpatrick interests in his absence.

Pamela and Robert set about learning the extent of Jamie’s many holdings. Pamela finds it daunting; Jamie’s business affairs are far more elaborate than anything she’d experienced back in Boston. She is very grateful to have Robert’s assistance.

Philip, Jamie’s great uncle, arrives. He makes Pamela uncomfortable and does not appreciate Pamela at the helm of his nephew’s enterprises. He believes Jamie is dead, and that he, Philip, is rightful heir to the estate.

Later, after the smarmy Philip takes his leave, Robert expresses his own concern that Pamela’s tenure as head of the Kirkpatrick estate may not be on solid footing should Jamie actually be dead. Pamela refuses to think that Jamie will not return one day.

Pamela reads entries from Jamie’s journal that date from June through August, 1962. She learns of the brokenness between Jamie and his wife, Colleen, and of how Jamie first came to notice the child Pamela that summer. This is when Pamela breaks her ankle and Jamie tends to her as she recovers. He is taken with this clever, mature 12-year old; she is clearly a kindred spirit.

During a less-than-lucid episode for Jamie that summer, Pamela cared and comforted him. Pamela learns that she provided salvation for Jamie that summer.

Part 5, Back in the USSR
Chapter 28, The Frozen Forest

Jamie awakens to learn he is being held as a prisoner in a Russian camp, believed to be operating as a spy in cahoots with the Americans. Andrei is not with him.

His captors had been following him for many years, dating back to his college days with Andrei. They showed him photographs, some of them taken at times of intimacy with a number of different women. One photograph depicts Pamela, who is also believed by his captors to be a spy.

Jamie is unaware of the exact location of the camp, but learns that it had once been a monastery. It was now a logging camp hidden within a deep forest.

Jamie spends his days cutting timber along with his bunkmates, Shura and Volodya. Shura explains the hierarchy of power at the camp to Jamie. A man named Gregor is the real power within the camp, someone even the guards have learned to fear. Shura advises Jamie to place trust in no one, and to keep a low profile.

Chapter 29, Dance of Thieves

Six weeks after his arrival at the camp, Jamie encounters Vanya, a young man regarded as the camp’s whore. Vanya is being intimidated by a group of other prisoners before he is shoved into one of the huts. Jamie knows the boy is being abused, and he enters the room to witness Gregor raping Vanya.

Jamie intervenes and Vanya runs to hide in the corner. The other prisoners present surround Jamie menacingly.

Gregor intended to replace Vanya with Jamie. Suddenly an older prisoner, Nikolai, appears at the door of the hut with a weapon in his hands and tells Gregor to let Jamie go. Nikolai’s presence must have intimidated the other prisoners as they all started to leave the hut. Gregor, too, unhanded Jamie and left, but promised Jamie that another opportunity awaits in the near future.

In order to take the wind out of Gregor’s sails, Jamie stealthily sneaks into Gregor’s hut at night. He silently puts a knife to Gregor’s throat and threatens him with his life should he ever attempt to rape Jamie in the future.

Jamie returns to his hut, the one he shares with Nikolai, somehow escaping a return attack by Gregor and his minions. Nikolai is awake, and tells Jamie he did the right thing.

Q1) How do you think Pamela reacted when she read those portions of Jamie’s journal from 1962? Do you think she had any awareness of the impact she had on Jamie’s life back when she was 12 years old?

Q2) What is it about Nikolai that made Gregor walk out of his hut? Why do you think Nikolai supports Jamie’s night attack on Gregor?
