Chapter 59: Paris Ghosts

Pamela travels to Paris with the key Yevgena gave her. The house, bought by Jame's grandfather after WWII, is in an old and respectable quarter of the city. The housekeeper in residence, Felicie, joins Pamela for dinner and tells her story.

Felicie was hired as a nurse and for her secrecy. Jamie's was not a single birth, he had a twin sister, her name was Adele. Turns out Adele was born with mental disabilities and was hidden away by the family. Jamie learned about his sister when he was 16 and from that time on he loved and doted on her for the rest of her life. When Pamela asks Felicie what this news has to do with her being in Paris, the housekeeper gives her a letter from Jamie.

In the letter Jamie tells Pamela that Lucien Broughton was born in a house for unwed mothers on the same day as he and Adele. When the family sent Adele away their public story was that she died. Jamie thinks the Reverend believes he is actually Jaime's twin.
Jamie tells Pamela to do what she must with this information in order to protect the business.

1. Some more shock and awe - didn't see this one coming. I have always wondered exactly what Lucien's problem was with Jamie. It has always felt a tad personal to be simply political power.

Chapter 60: The Black Pope

The day after following the revelations about Adele and Lucien, Pamela sets out to meet with Jamie's banker and solicitors. She has the feeling that she is being followed.

After dinner that night Pamela goes out for a walk, she catches and confronts her stalker. She discovers a child, a girl named Heloise, whose instructions are to follow Pamela to make she is not followed by anyone else and then to deliver her to a priest at Notre Dame the next night.
With further questioning over hot chocolate and sweets, Pamela believes the priest may be Father Lawrence.

Fr. Lawrence is just the go between, the real meeting is with Giacomo Brandisi, the head of the Jesuit Order. Brandisi starts by telling Pamela that with all actions, there are things we see, the cause and effect, but that sometimes there are things we don't/can't see that are affected as well. He says that Jamie, in his recklessness, sometimes starts things in motion that he didn't necessarily intend.

The Black Pope is well informed, he knows Pamela has met with a mutual acquaintance in London, he knows there are people who might find it convenient if Jamie did not return and he knows of a letter Jamie left for Pamela. He tells her she should read it.

1. What, exactly, is the purpose of this secretive meeting with Brandisi? Do he and Pamela plot or make plans do you think?

2. Brandisi suggests that Jamie might have intentionally let himself get caught in the USSR. I have to admit the thought crossed my mind as well - the man has always seemed to be one step ahead. I don't believe it was intentional, in this case, what do you think?

Chapter 61: Julian

Back in Ireland, Pamela is hosting a dinner at Jamie's house. It's a business/political type dinner, something she is good at and feels confident doing. Provide good food, good wine/spirits, relaxing atmosphere and enjoyable talk.
The night is well choreographed until.....

Philip arrives with Julian!

Pamela & Casey know right away who Julian must be, the resemblance is striking. Except for his hair and eye color, Julian is the spitting image of Jamie.

Pamela is shocked, she believes Jamie does not know about Julian or he would have prepared/warned her. She also thinks that maybe she needs to start considering that Jamie won't be coming home. She can't hold his empire together against family like this.

Casey tells her to take her time, think it all through, Jamie might not consider this child to be a blessing.

1. Do you think Jamie knows about the boy? Again I found myself wondering how he could not - I'm not used to have this much wool pulled over the mans eyes ;-)

Thanks for putting up with me this week ladies - I'm not very good at summarizing and coming up with thought provoking questions, but I do LOVE these books and I have fun trying :-)
