• (60/1 & 2) Just when I thought I was following things rather well, I found myself a little confused over Brandisi's involvement. If Jamie had intentionally gotten himself caught in the USSR, it would make sense that he'd trust Fr. Lawrence (or I guess Brandisi, too) with his plans. They would be trusted not to reveal anything to Pamela or anyone else. If Jamie did intentionally get caught, I think it might have been based on an attempt to help Andrei defect. • 60/1&2) I've been a little confused by this section of intrigue - starting back at that meeting of mystery people and now with Father Lawrence and Brandisi. I probably need to go back and read this section again and see if it makes better sense to me now. I guess it could be that Jamie purprosefully got himself caught, but did he know he'd not be with Andrei in the camp? Q. 1 I think Lucien saw in Jamie everything he didn't have -- a home, a family, opportunities, a seemingly charmed life and his envy and jealousy has become so warped and his own self-loathing has taken it to such heights that he literally wants to destroy the person he wishes he was but knows he can never be; this is certainly a classic theme in literature and I suspect not uncommon in the real world. • Q2. I do think Pamela and Brandisi plot and plan, and he offers her information and tactics to fight back against those who would destroy and steal Jamie's companies and legacy. The idea that Jamie let himself get captured did cross my mind. He may not have planned it out explicitly, but I think he was in such a dark place mentally and emotionally, that he may not have played the game as cleverly as his is able and so wound up captured. Q3. I suspect he does, but he stayed away to avoid causing further disruption in the life of the boys' mother.
