Subject: Part 11 – Belfast, For My Sins

Chapter 73 – The Trustees, September 1975

David reflects on the psychological damage being involved with « the murder club », as he’s come to call it, is doing to himself, including his being molested and not fighting back so as to maintain his cover. His musing are interrupted by the arrival at the meeting of Rev. Lucien Broughton, a man David fears has the ability to provide the scattered and self-interested Loyalist movement with a focus. Broughton reveals a plan to attack Noah Murray’s farm. David is chosen to be one of the 12 men carrying out the attack, and when the Reverend cuts their palms so they can sign in blood, he « accidently » cuts David to the bone. David knows he is under suspicion, knows he can tell nobody of the plan and wonders if he has finally reached the point where he has sold his soul to do his job.

Q1. Do you think David should tell Casey or Pat so they can at least get Kate away from the farm ?
Q2. Has David reached his personal point-of-no-return ? What about the letter he has left with Pamela to be delivered to the house at the end of the crooked lane ? Does this show that he still does feel, is still capable of love ?

Chapter 74 – A History of Ashes

A three am phone call tells the Riordans that the distillery is on fire and beyond saving. Pamela has a very strong suspicion of who is behind the fire, but cannot voice it for she has no proof. A body is found in the ruins, and Philip’s ring is on the hand. Pamela is worried suspicion of murder and arson will focus on her and Robert due to their legal fight with Philip. Casey wants her to back off and let the police handle things. Pamela knows the game has gone to far to back down now, and just hopes things will end in their favour.

Q1. Do you think it really is Philip’s body in the ruins ? If not, whose ? Who do you think was behind the fire ?

Chapter 75 – Day of Reckoning

The attack on Noah Murray’s farm goes wrong from the beginning ; Noah and his men are waiting for them. David realises this means there is a traitor in their group – aside from him – and that all of them will die, likely tortured by Murray’s men, before being executed.

David’s training and experience come to the fore and he begins to plan his retreat and crawl backwards off their field of fire. David finds himself in a ditch with Lenny & four others. He realises the ditch if filled with a flammable liquid and manages to escape just as it explodes. He finds himself in the woods, weaponless, and face-to-face with a burnt and armed Lenny. David manages to kill Lenny with his own knife and then the world exploded once again.

David wakes to find Lenny’s dead body on his, shielding him from the last of the bullets. It is night and nobody else is alive and he is alone in the woods. David recalls seeing Noah Murray aiming his gun directly at him, but clearly he did not shoot to kill. Why ?

Q1. Who do you think was the traitor ?
Q2. Why didn’t Noah kill David ? Why did his men leave the bodies in the woods rather than dealing with them right away ?
