Chapter 84 – Departures, October 1975

Jamie returns from a hard day in the woods, exhausted and missing Kolya to find Gregor waiting for him with the news that Violet is gone, taken away by the KGB. She has left the baby behind and Andrei is waiting for him in their hut. Gregor admits that he always suspected Violet was not all she seemed. Andrei tells Jamie he must take Kolya and go – that whether Violet was KGB or has been brought in by them for questioning, he must get out now. Soon, Kolya will be put into an orphanage where he will die and Andrei cannot take him, for he does not trust his wife to do right by the child should anything happen to him. Andrei says he will use his power to get Jamie and Kolya out.

Jamie finds Nikolai dead, a suicide, and one more thing that held him to the camp is gone. He believes Nikolai killed himself so Jamie would not feel guilt at leaving him behind. Vanya comes into the room and tells Jamie he is going with him when he goes.

Q1. What do you think happened to Violet ? Is she KGB or has she been taken for questioning?

Chapter 85 – Dasvidania is Russian for Goodbye

Andrei tells Jamie it is up to him what he tells Kolya about his parentage; that he can even claim him as his own to make things simpler. The plans have been laid for their escape, with Gregor telling him of a long-forgotten tunnel that he thinks leads into the bor. It has also been decided that Shura will go with him, bringing his goat to provide milk for Kolya. Andrei and Jamie make their good-byes and there is an air of finality about them, as if this is the last time the men will meet.

The next night the small group prepare to leave the camp behind. Jamie tries to get Gregor to come, knowing that he will be questioned about their disappearance and that it will not go easy for Gregor. He refuses, saying that he cannot live outside of Russia. Gregor cuts both their palms; pressing their hands together, he calls Jamie brother and declares that soon both of them will be free.

The small group leaves in the pre-dawn, back-lit by the fires Gregor has started to hide their absence. Jamie takes one look back and sees Gregor, standing tall against the flames.

Q1. Again the idea, this time from Gregor, that there are certain places that are right for certain men and that they cannot live elsewhere, no matter the consequences. Would Gregor have truly withered and died outside of Russia? What ties men such as Gregor and Casey so tightly to one country that they will stay despite danger and suffering ?

Chapter 86 – Beauty

Jamie wakes before the others on the shores of a chilly lake and sees a heron picking it’s way through the shallows. He reflects on the horrible escape through the tunnel, not knowing what was in front of them, if they would be forced to turn back until finally stepping out into a silent stand of fir. They have been travelling quickly, but so far all are doing well, even Kolya, who spends his days strapped to Jamie or Vanya. Watching the heron finally rise into the sky, something inside Jamie, something he had kept "still and frozen" since coming to Russia, breaks through and he knows that he can again stand in awe at beauty, "ache for all that the world was and all that it was not."

Q1. Why does Jamie have this thawing within himself when he is still not safe, still in Russia and in danger?
