I believe it can be true that someone is so closely linked to their country of birth that leaving it would mean death (or something akin to death). But I also feel that most of us are incredibly adaptable, too.

My mother's dear friend, Hildegard, who escaped Hitler's Germany back in 1930-something, adapted to America very well. I spoke with her the other day to give her an update on my mom's rehab progress and it is clear Hildegard still wishes she could return home to Stuttgart before she dies. All the years I've known her she's carried a certain sadness with her, a heaviness of spirit. My mother and I have always felt it was her longing to be back in her homeland.

Gregor, I think, is possibly (probably?) a dead man whether he stays in Russia or escapes. He is now willing to die for Jamie if it comes to that. He loves the man enough that he no longer needs to control him. Gregor is, perhaps for the first time, thinking beyond his own selfish needs.

Gregor blew me away. When we first 'met' I couldn't have imagined feeling the way I do about him now. Cindy, you really jumped over some kind of literary boundary with this book, surpassed your own talents and skills as a writer. I don't know how to say it except that you have most definitely found your voice!
