Subject: 1. Quite the lifestyle is portrayed of the other writers living in Paris! I think Hadley has 'old-fashioned' family values, at least they don't fit in with her current crowd. She doesn't agree with all the philandering going on, believing in the more traditional marriage of two committed adults. Ernest seems to be faithful (at first) but it's a constant worry that he will stray, like his companions, causing her concern about her hold on him. This seems totally reasonable to me, living in a faithful arrangement with a husband, and I would hardly call it a weakness.

  • 2. I think we've mentioned how Ernest and Hadley complement each other, fill in the gaps, and make a 'whole' when they are at their best. I can't remember the specifics of the other marriages, but they weren't based on total committment, but 'open' arrangements, that may suit for a time, but don't seem to really sustain them.
