Subject: I feel like a slug, being this late in responding. You know, that's a great question. I guess confinement represents something static, while freedom is in constant motion always forward. Even Rip Van Winkle - it's just fascinating to learn about someone being almost suspended in time. Remember that awful case of the daughter (and her children) being entrapped in Austria by her horrid father? I don't know why it's so interesting, but it sure is to me. The part of the book that effected me the most was at the beginning when Ma and Jack were making their plan for escape. I got so nervous for Jack's welfare that I had to put the book down for awhile before summoning up the guts to continue reading.
